The ethical tradition of the nursing profession is self reflective, distinct and enduring. The nurses have to follow a code of ethics that make explicit the values, primary goals and obligations of the profession. This paper analyzes my professional code from an ethical perspective through the identification of four ethical concepts.
Nurses respect the dignity, rights and the worth of all humanity. This should be irrespective of the nature of the health problem. A person’s worth is not defined by sickness, disability, proximity to death or functional status. This respect should extend to all those who require the services of a nurse for health promotion or prevention, and for the restoration of health. The measures that are taken by nurses in the provision of care to a patient enable the patient to live with, emotional, physical, spiritual and social well-being as it is expected.
The care provided by nurses is aimed at maximizing those values, which a patient has treasured in life. It extends the supportive care to the family and other significant people in the patient’s life. Nursing care is dedicated towards meeting the comprehensive needs of patient and their families. This is very vital when in care of patients and their families; at the brink of life, to relive and prevent the cascading of suffering and symptoms that are associated with dying (American Nurses Association, 2005).
Nurses are leaders and vigilant advocates in the delivery of humane and dignified care. They actively assure and assess the appropriate and responsible use of interventions aimed at minimizing unwarranted treatment and patient suffering.
