Millennium Development Goals 2. a. the purpose of the goal. Millennium development goals are a blueprint that includes the important pledges byall nations in the world that they target to accomplish by the year 2015. Out of the eight goals, I will discuss the first goal, which is “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.” The purpose of this goal is to eradicate hunger and poverty by the year 2015. b. Identify the main objectives. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger as a goal of the millennium development goals has three key objectives.

The first target is to halve the proportion of people living on less than $1.25 a day by the year 2015 (“World Health Organization”, 2013). This will be achieved by reducing the number of people living below $1.25 dollars a day. The United Nations defines poverty as the situation where a person survives in less than one dollar in a day. This reduction will automatically translate to the reduction of the poverty gap among the people. Also, it targets at reducing the share of the poorest quintile in the national consumption.

In the second objective, countries hope to achieve decent employment for women, men and the young people. This target is possible through increasingly employment rate of people, improving GDP Growth per every employed person, as well as increasing the proportion of family members who are actively employed. The final target is reducing by half the proportion of people suffering from hunger and hunger related conditions. The goal purposes at raising the prevalence of underweight children aged five years and below and the proportion of the population below minimum dietary levels required in energy consumption. c. Provide your insight on whether you feel the goal you selected is attainable.

Remember to support your answer through previous research. The goal was an ambitious plan for the entire world. Many people are suffering from hunger and poverty especially in the developing countries (Allam & Cleeve, 2004). While all nations pledged to implement this goal, the realities of achieving it remaining a pipe dream for many countries. The African and the Latin American countries are the most affected. Their progress of eradicating poverty is far from being real. According to Ogujiuba & Jumare (2012) many people in Africa die from hunger and poverty.

The developed nations however portray a different scenario from the developing countries. Countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia among others are close to achieving this goal. To these countries, this goal is attainable. On the other hand, most of the countries of Africa and especially those of the Sub-Saharan Africa suffer from hunger. Even to this day, a year to 2015, they still rely on food relief provided by the Red Cross and the United Nations. The level of unemployment is quite high in these countries, with the youth and the women being the most affected people.

In most families and especially the marginalized areas, no person is employed. These countries mostly lack machinery and resources to implement this goal (Cleeve & Ndhlovu, 2004). 3. Discuss the role of governments, non-government agencies, health care systems, health care professionals, and business partnerships moving toward the accomplishing the Millennium Development Goals.The task of achieving the millennium development goals is not a responsibility of just the government. Other stakeholders too are responsible, and play a significant role.

The role of the government is mostly providing the crucial infrastructure, policy framework and mechanisms that enable other stakeholders to act smoothly in order to forge these goals ahead (Allam & Cleeve, 2004). Non-governmental agencies such as the United Nations and the Red Cross, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund play the role of liaison and promoting the campaigns directed towards the achieving these goals. They also act as watchdogs that overlook the commitment of the government in pursuing the MDGs (Cleeve & Ndhlovu, 2004).

Healthcare systems are responsible with providing the required research tools, knowledge, equipment and resources to fight diseases. On the other hand, the role of the health care professionals is providing the people with required expertise and skills required to fight against diseases. Business partnerships offer jobs to the people to reduce the level of poverty in the economy. 4. The Millennium Development Goals Report is a comprehensive report of the progressive status of the MDGs compiled in the year 2007, reporting on the commitment of governments in the years of 2000s. It gives a general overview of the progress made by countries and the world in the general in pursuing the MDGs. According to the report, there has been some progress, though little, in eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. The report notes that the level of poverty in the Sub-Saharan Africa has significantly reduced with time.

Between the year 1990 and 2004, the report states that of people living in extreme poverty fell from nearly a third to 19 per cent over this period. It is optimistic that if the progress continues, the MDG target will be met (“United Nations”, 2007). Not all nurses are required to be first responders.
