Personal ment al Affiliation Personal ment Why do you want to become a nurse? I have always envisioned pursuing a career in the field of health care. The factor which provided the impetus for this decision included the genuine enthusiasm to be an instrumental contributor to the improvement of health and well-being of others through direct patient care. There is this innate and burning desire to be involved in addressing the illnesses of people through physical, emotional, mental, and even spiritual care.

I acknowledge, therefore, that nursing is the ultimate profession that would assist in fulfilling my personal and professional goal of providing holistic care. Concurrently, from a reflective stance, I realized that nursing is a career with vast opportunities for growth. As people get older, there would always be a need to address various ailments through their lifetime. As such, one could never be bored in this profession as it is seen to pose varied challenges through meeting diverse people with unique and distinct health conditions; yet, it also provides opportunities for personal fulfillment and uplifting rewards.2) What is the graduate specialty track you have selected?

Why have you chosen it and what have you done to research this role? The graduate specialty track that I have selected is the Dual Family Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Public Health Nursing Program. I have always had the interest to gain specialization in the provision of primary care services, not only to individuals; but more so, to family members, and even local community residents within a defined population. I am interested to pursue higher education in this field to gain advanced theoretical frameworks on the provision and delivery of holistic care to a wider range of clientele.

Through research in the online medium on this field of specialization, I strongly believe that by pursuing advanced courses and modules through the program, I would be accorded with the opportunity to develop the skills required for addressing health care issues within the community level that requires services such as addressing chronic illness, educating members on preventive care, as well as effectively focusing on interventions for acute care, as needed.3) Describe a situation in which you took on a leadership role and describe the outcome.

Also, how would you apply this experience to your role as a future Advanced Practice Nurse? A situation that could be remembered regarding taking a leadership role was when I was elected the leader of a group in terms of complying with an academic project. As the leader, I assumed a proactive stance at discerning the need to delegate tasks; effectively identify the roles and responsibilities of each of the member according to their competencies and skills; as well as regularly monitoring the performance of each member to ensure that tasks were appropriately accomplished according to schedule.

Through applying the needed leadership style, the group was able to effectively achieve the defined goals and the outcome of the project turned out to be successful. As such, I would apply this experience to my role as a future Advanced Practice Nurse through an assessment of the subordinates’ skills and competencies, as well as the goals of the organization which we serve. I recognize that leaders should exude the needed skills and competencies, depending on the personalities of the subordinates and an assessment of the situation at hand.4) Describe a situation in your life where you committed a great deal of time on a project.

You felt confident about your work, yet the evaluation(s) of your project returned suggesting the project needed substantial improvement. How did you deal with this situation and what was the outcome? There were several projects and reports required from previous academic courses where I believed I did my very best prior to turning them in for final submission. However, some professors were more demanding and highly disconcerting than others; and thus, some projects were returned suggesting improvements according to specifically detailed feedback.

Honestly, I initially felt disappointed for the reason that I apparently failed to meet the expectations. But I also saw these as opportunities for personal growth. Since weaknesses were appropriately identified, I learned from the mistakes made and followed the suggestions for improvement. These situations made me realize that these were in fact opportunities that make me strive harder to be better and not to repeat the mistakes that were committed. Evidently, these were learning experiences that enabled turning weaknesses into strengths and made me a better person in the end.
