Extract of sample "Care and Safety of the Patient with Alcoholism"

The exact point where alcohol addiction begins is hard to pinpoint. Weakness of character cannot be one of the reasons since not every person has equal willpower. Habits of regular alcoholic drinking turn into a physiological need and that is where human physiology outraces human psychology or willpower since even if the patient is aware of the habit or outcomes of the habit, the physiologic consequences of limiting alcohol consumption become almost unbearable without support hence the aim of a nurse is to intervene and support the patient. Being an RN responsible for the care of such patients it is an obligation on my part to understand the needs of the patient without making any kind of assumption and keeping the dignity of the patient (NMC,2008).

An RN needs to understand the want for mental, emotional, and physiological support during the withdrawal period and provide care accordingly. The aim is to support them since the phase of withdrawal is extremely tough and in many cases converts into aggressive behavior. Care and safety of the patient also come under the duty of an RN besides confidentiality.
