The Need for the ACA to Provide American Family the Ability to Purchase Affordable Comprehensive Healthcare Insurance That Includes Abortion CoverageIntroduction Until the nineteenth century, most women were finding an easy time to have an abortion. During this period, there were no penalties or regulations hindering abortion. However, with the beginning of the new century, things drastically changed especially with the sponsored antiabortion campaign and laws on abortion. Most of these campaigns and laws aimed at professionalizing the medical practice. By 1900, there were laws in place that made the practice illegal except when the life of the woman was endangered. However, by the 1960’s, things changed when various groups employed a combination of political campaigns, judicial and legislations to change the old laws on abortion (Simon 58). The debates on abortion generally refer to some of the ongoing controversies, which surround the legal and moral abortion status. Generally, two different groups are involved in the debates on abortion across the globe. The two groups are self-described as the pro-life movements and the pro-choice movement (Nossiff 96). In this case, the pro-choice movements stand in favor of the abortion where a woman has the right to choose or do what they wish with their fetus while the pro-life movement emphasizes on the right of the fetus. Without question, people’s opinions on the aspect of abortion depend on social myriad, economic factors and moral aspects in the society (Simon 94). Ultimately, abortion policies depend on the political arena. This paper will generally examine some of the common policies, which are in favor of abortion. Additionally, the paper will elaborate on some of the intimate decisions women make while terminating the pregnancy. Alternatively, the paper will attempt to solve the issue of abortion as a medical practice that is among the most politicized across the globe. Background During the past decades, abortion was considered as a family planning, population control and gender selection aspects. Alternatively, abortion was a matter of property right to patriarch. In some instances, the rights of the forthcoming mothers and less the forthcoming child were put into consideration. In as much as abortion was legal, abortion morality, the aspect of birth control and abandonment of a child was mostly discussed. Most discussions regarding abortion often concerned man’s nature, soul’s existence and the beginning of life. While modern debates on the aspects of abortion retain the language of the traditional debates when it comes to the abortion issue, the terminology has generally acquired new and modern meanings (Hull, 38). Discussions regarding accepted fetus personhood have generally been made complicated by some of the legal children statuses. According to the law, fetuses are not recognized as full persons until they attain certain age. However, things are changing in the modern world and in some quarters, they are seen as people (Hull 67). There is the argument that if a fetus is really a person, then it is the type of person with very special circumstances. Politically, the process of abortion is defined through various legal documentations whereby the law decisions are established by the government. Alternatively, laws regarding to abortion in politics usually surrounds privacy rights on the issue of abortion. Recent years has seen abundant debates on the extent of the regulations on the abortion issue. Project Statement In the abortion policies debate, the main struggle for the past centuries has been over the enquiry; what is being aborted, the child, a fetus or the embryo? Additionally, there have been questions on who is given the top priority during the medical process. Is it the mother or the unborn child/fetus/embryo? Objectives This main objective of the paper is to examine the common policies, which allow abortion. Additionally, the paper seeks to elaborate on the intimate decisions that women make on doing an abortion instead of carrying the baby for nine months. Alternatively, the paper will try to solve the issue of abortion as a medical practice that is among the most politicized across the globe. Policy favoring abortion Bodily rights The argument regarding abortion was first brought forwards by Jarvis Thomson stating that even if the mother allows the fetus to live, then abortion as a medical practice is morally permissible. Jarvis points out that, this is because the mother of the unborn child has the right to her body. His argument on the bodily right draws a general analogy between forcing a woman’s body to get used to being a dialysis machinery for an individual suffering from kidney failure and continuing with an unwanted pregnancy (Abortion Policies, 48). The statement argues that, it would be tolerable to ‘unplug’ and cause the death of an individual using one’s kidneys. By this, Jarvis feels that it would be permissible to conduct an abortion. In saying this, the policy states that the fetus has no right to exploit a woman’s body against her own will. Alternatively, the women’s rights argue that women have the moral obligation and right to choose what they can do with their bodies, to their bodies, or with their bodies. The policy also claims that the women just like any other person have the right to abort and the medical practice is vital for the sake of gender equality. Additionally, the policy on body rights claim that abortion rights remains essential for women when they need to achieve their capabilities. Alternatively, the policy claims that banning of abortion will put more women at risk. The policy elaborates that by forcing women to keep the pregnancy might result in illegal abortionists (Abortion Policies, 84). However, critics of this policy feel that there are various dis-analogies between kidney failure scenario and abortion (Abortion Policies, 102). Critics argue that a fetus is the child of a woman as opposed to a stranger and the aspect of abortion destroys the fetus instead of just letting it die. Additionally, the critics argue that in a situation where the pregnancy was as a result of voluntary intercourse, then the fetus mother will be tactically knowledgeable about the fetus exploiting her body. In this case, the woman has the responsibility of allowing the fetus to exploit her body since it was done on her knowledge. The American Medical Association also supports the radical abortion policies. Its first position on the issue of abortion is the support for Abortion funded by Taxpayers. In this case, the AMA states that, they do not only want the medical practice without restrictions, they are also demanding that the government pay for it. Alternatively, the association also wants the abortion industry to be protected from legal scrutiny (Legge 75). This would mean that in case the abortion centers are under scrutiny by the outside sources, the government should be willing to protect them. The AMA’s third position on the issue of abortion is that there should be support for partial-birth abortion. In doing this, the association opposes the 2003 act on partial birth abortion act. In as much as the association is pro-abortionists, the association states that trained physicians should be the only people to perform abortion. Generally, the association encourages any specialty society that has adopted a position, which is contrary to the modification of its position regarding the issue of abortion. It also reaffirms its support of fetal tissue use from induced abortion researches, which are scientific (Legge 93). Financial Aspect The bodily rights policy on abortion with the help of the American Medical Association position on the issue is that the government funds or support abortion by the use of Taxpayers’ funds. Alternatively, some pro-abortion associations demands that the government pay for the abortion policies. Options and Recommendations In as much as there are many pro-abortion associations, which justify the need for abortion in the contemporary world, abortion remains unethical in the modern society. Alternatively, many risks are involved in the medical practice. Therefore, it would be unreasonable to participate in any aspects of abortions. Abortion can damage a woman’s womb and can cause permanent damage to an individual. It would be important if some of the policies favoring abortion are ignored for the sake of life.
