RRL RRL The following questions pertain Sanford, J., Townsend-Rocchicciolli,J.,Horigan, A., &Hall, P. (2011). A process of decision making by caregivers of family members with heart failure.Research & Theory for Nursing Practice, 25(1), 55–70.1) What is the purpose of this research? The purpose of this grounded theory study was to examine how caregivers of family members with HF make decisions. A nonlinear decision-making process consisting of several actions was identified, which included actualizing; seeking input, information, or support; reflecting; choosing; evaluating; and validating the decision. 2) What is the research question (or questions)?

This may be implicit or explicit. The research question is that what you should do as a caregiver to help a person suffering from heart failure has hopes in life3) Did the authors describe the design of this study? If so, give a description.Yes. The author indicated that the aim of this research was to identify some of the non-linear decision making process caregiver articulates when it comes to decision making to people with heart failure in which the members of the family can’t take it anymore.4) What characteristics does this study possess that are qualitative in nature?

Review Chapter 2.This is a social science journal and this fully indicates that the study too poses qualitative aspect.5) What is the evidence that this journal is peer-reviewed? Does the journal have an editorial board? (Look for the journal’s website to discover this information)This journal has been written using scientific terms correctly and this confirms that the journal is peer-reviewed. In addition, the journal also has got the editorial board. In consideration of this statement “Heart failure (HF) is a major cardiovascular problem and the number of people living with HF continues to climb.

Throughout the illness continuum, patients and their family caregivers are involved in decision making. As the illness worsens and patients can no longer make decisions, decision making becomes the responsibility of their caregivers who may have little preparation for the role” we articulate that this journal is peer reviewed.6) Is there evidence of any conflict of interest? Do the authors have any potential financial gain from the results of this study? No. the author is trying to give ways possible ways and the importance of caregivers in our society and therefore his line of interest is to pass an information rather than gainig financial from the results of this study.7) Describe the population for this study.

This study indicates that a number of patients with heart failure suffers a lot especially at that point that their members can’t take it more. 90 percent of the total population usually lives the burden to caregivers who in turn tries to help this people at their level best.8) How was the sample selected? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this sampling strategy? The strengths of this sample is that it has tried to find ways in which the position of a caregiver should be taken into account though possessing one important weakness in that it does not account all area pertaining the subject.9) Were the subjects in this study vulnerable?

Were there any risks for them as the result of participation in the research study?Yes and simply because heart failure (HF) is a major cardiovascular problem and the number of people living with HF and this issue requires special attention to both practitioners and medical fraternity as a whole.10) Are there any HIPAA concerns that are evident in this study? No. the study is baseless keeping in mind that the study relies on the data that was taken out of sampling and that there might be an aspect of estimation in it.

The following questions pertain to: Schwarz, K., Mion, P., Hudock, D., &Litman, G. (2008). Telemonitoring of heart failure patients and their caregivers: A pilot randomized controlled study. Progress in Cardiovascular Nursing, 23(1), 18–26.11) What is the purpose of this research? The purpose of this pilot study was to examine whether telemonitoring by an advanced practice nurse reduced subsequent hospital readmissions, emergency department visits, costs, and risk of hospital readmission for patients with HF.12) What is the research question (or questions)?

This may be implicit or explicit. Is telemonitoring by an advanced practice nurse reducing subsequent readmissions, emergency department visits, costs, and risk of hospital readmission for patients with HF.? This research question is explicit.13) Did the authors describe the design of this study? If so, give a description.Yes. The author gave the design of this project by indicating the total number of entities who were interviewed and their results articulated through data manipulation.14) What characteristics does this study possess that are quantitative in nature?

Review Chapter 2.This is a social science journal and this fully indicates that the study too poses qualitative aspect. In addition, the purposeful of this journal was to found out how telemonotoring performs, keeping in mind that this is an aspect that exhibits scientific characteristics.15) What is the evidence that this journal is peer-reviewed? Does the journal have an editorial board? (Look for the journal’s website to discover this information)Journal has been written using scientific terms correctly and this confirms that the journal is peer-reviewed.

In addition, Caregiver mastery, informal social support, and electronic home monitoring were not significant predictors for risk of hospital readmission.Further studies should address the interaction between the advanced practice nurse and follow-up intervention with telemonitoring of patients with HF to better target those who are most likely to benefit.16) Is there evidence of any conflict of interest? Do the authors have any potential financial gain from the results of this study? No. the author just needed to share the problem this sector is encountering at large.

He has done this but indicating that the feasibility of adapting this approach is limited, how- ever costs for home visits by an APN are high, a shortage of APNs employed in home care exists, and funding for home care has decreased with the Medicare Prospective Payment System.5 An alternative strategy for promoting self-management of HF is the use of electronic home monitoring (EHM).17) Describe the population for this study.Progress in Cardiovascular Nursing Winter 2008 18 www.lejacq.com ID: 6611 Hing eart failure (HF) is the lead- cause of hospitalization for persons older than 65 years and often necessitates assistance from family caregivers.

1,2 Approximately 40% of older adults are readmitted within 3 months post discharge, resulting in significant health care costs.2,3 Indeed, more than one million hospitalizations attributed to HF cost the patient and United States health care system over $27 billion a year.1 Hospitalizations related to HF are complicated by the aging process, comorbidities, and psychosocial concerns that affect successful management.18) How was the sample selected? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this sampling strategy?

The strengths of this sample is that it has tried to find ways in which the position of a caregiver should be taken into account though possessing one important weakness in that it does not account all area pertaining the subject19) Were the subjects in this study vulnerable? Were there any risks for them as the result of participation in the research study?Yes. Reflecting on this study we find various data outcomes indicating that One hundred two patient/caregiver dyads were randomized into 2 groups post discharge; 84 dyads completed the study.

Hospital readmissions, emergency department visits, costs, and days to readmission were abstracted from medical records. Participants were interviewed soon after discharge and 3 months later about effects of telemonitoring on depressive symptoms, quality of life, and caregiver mastery.Caregiver mastery, informal social support, and electronic home monitoring were not significant predictors for risk of hospital readmission. Further studies should address the interaction between the advanced practice nurse and follow-up intervention with telemonitoring of patients with HF to better target those who are most likely to benefit.

This is clear evidence that this study is vulnerable.20) Are there any HIPAA concerns that are evident in this study? There is HIPAA concern and this is simply because study has concrete exposition on the outcomes current and unveiled by the survey just to indicate how telemonitoring us working.ReferenceSanford, J., Townsend-Rocchicciolli,J.,Horigan, A., &Hall, P.
