Application of Theory Paper Introduction A theory can be defined as a concept and an assumption that projects a systematic view of phenomena. The components of a theory are based around the concept, definition, assumption and phenomenon. Nursing theories are designed to guiding the practice of nursing by generating new knowledge and also helps different stakeholders to explain the concept of nursing. Moreover, nursing theories finds solutions to questions which would have been left unanswered to nurses. Virginia Henderson’ Need Theory emphasizes the essentials of increasing the manner in which a patient becomes independent after being hospitalized to ensure that progress is monitored. The theory makes use of the fourteen components which are solely based on the wants of human beings. The theory works on two major assumptions which are “Care givers also known as nurses have a responsibility of looking after the client until they are in a position where they can adequately look after themselves’ and “Nurses are always on the look and selfless in ensuring that the patients recover for their ailments” and lastly “Nurses will be more effective when they obtain an undergraduate certificate in both arts and sciences”. This paper will examine the problem in nursing leadership by providing scholarly evidence to support the issue. In addition, it will present one strategy and the concepts and principles where the nursing theory are applicable, provide a rationale for the chosen strategy and one ethical strategy for the theory. The Problem/Issue Nursing leadership has been an emerging issue over the years because of the numerous challenges which various sectors of nursing encounter. Globalization in today’s society has really changed the shape of nursing and nurses across the globe require effective leadership to maintain to the required standards and generate a new generation of nurses. Quality in many health cares is determined by the efficacy of the leadership available. On the other hand leadership is extremely essential in all institutions or organizations. It can be defined as the process through which goals are identified by providing accurate support and motivation(McEwen & Wills, 2007). Nursing practice requires accurate evidence that is only obtained through extensive research. Putting together the evidence collected into nursing practice is necessary for quality to be achieved in the nursing filed. Therefore the behaviors of most health care providers have been wanting as they have not been able to accurately determine the kinds of involvement needed to positively influence the research-based care. Effective leadership qualities from managers and administrators is important as they are the ones who give the evidence based practice support by advising health care providers working under them on the essence of the research based care. Effective leadership is really important in administering quality to nursing institutions or health cares. However, in the course of practice, nurses are always confused on whether to employ different concepts of leadership. Those who have opted for other concepts of leadership rather than effective leadership always thinks that effective leadership is as difficult to understand. Leaders in the nursing care are considered as anyone who is able to give assistance to a patient or collogue in time of need. Nurses leaders are key factors considered in a patient care because the choices they make affects the patient either negatively or positively. Therefore it is the leaders who are suppose to identify problems which are hindering the success of supportive clinical environment to address them so as to improve the quality of all major stakeholders concerned within the nursing profession. When nurse leaders are not able to accurately identify solutions to the challenges they face through accurate decision making, then quality administered in the institution is compromised (McEwen & Wills, 2007). Nurse leaders who are not creative and innovative can not use any influence they posse in improving the quality of patients whom they are caring for. Effective nurse leaders should be able to creative and innovative thus successfully tackling any challenges that may arise while administering nursing care to a patient. Moreover, they should be able to speak to or for their patients by being decisive, resilient and purpose driven. Effective leadership is really necessary in promoting the use of new technologies and the application of basic principles of nursing to improve the quality of healthcare administered to a patient. It should also encourage members in the profession to make them turn into competent clinicians who can administer effective care without being supervised or placed under pressure to accomplish their roles (McEwen & Wills, 2007). Strategy for Resolving the Identified Issue The theory is resourceful in resolving leadership issues identified above. This is because it works on major assumptions that nurses are expected to care for their patients until they are in a position to fully care for themselves. it also works on an assumption, that patients are eager individuals who posses the desire to return to health. When used accurately, the theory helps in solving leadership issues experienced by professional nurses or institutions in their service delivery to the patient (Marshall & Marshall, 2011). The theory gives appropriate actions which can be used in implementing a plan that will benefit all individuals tasked with leadership responsibilities within a health care set-up. Second is that the theory helps in solving leadership problems being experienced in a health care institution by incorporating psychological aspects of communication and learning. This is important especially in assisting nurse leaders and patients to communicate their emotions, needs, worries and opinions of the running, services or institution in place. Third is that the theory takes sociologically oriented to occupation and recreation making both major players to perform their roles in a manner where goals and objectives are met. This encourages hard work in all major leadership areas as the nurses and other physicians are motivated by being allowed to participate in various forms of recreation activities (Marshall & Marshall, 2011). Fourth is that the theory takes into consideration the spiritual and moral being of different shareholders in a health care set-up. When religious and moral principles are incorporated into leadership elements, the end result is always an effective leadership because those concerned perform in accordance to their religious and moral principles. The rationale behind choosing the strategy is that in the sector of nursing diagnosis, it allows nurses and other specialties to compare their information to awareness base of ailments and health of a patient. Moreover, it also allows nurses to put their implementation into practice by assisting patients in various areas like carrying out treatment as instructed by the physician. Lastly, the strategy is resourceful because of the Henderson’s fourteen components highlighted and their definition: this directs nurses and other physicians in accomplishing their task. An ethical strategy applicable in the theory is that, the theory places emphasis on basic human needs which are of extreme consideration. It is advocates for the rights of individuals by taking into consideration the basic human needs and how nursing as a practice can assists in meeting these needs. The basic human needs we all know of are food, water and shelter and the theory ensuring that in the course of rendering health care services to a patient, the needs and their substitutes are met. Moreover, the theory is logical because it the person who invented it provides a logical description of what he or she believes composes nursing (Marshall & Marshall, 2011). Conclusion In conclusion, the application of nursing theory in solving leadership issues within a health care scenario is extremely important. The nursing theory brings forth evidenced-based quality improvement and transformation in the health care industry by availing new knowledge to assist nurses in the daily roles in an institution or a health set-up. It has a positive impact on the different types of nursing practice as it highlights the policies which should be keenly considered by any health care provider in the administration of health care services to a patient. In addition, using theories shape nursing models and frameworks available for nurses and assist in improving quality of health care services available to patients. Moreover, it is logical and consistent with every day observation in health care set-up, therefore is useful in making assumptions about issues at hand like the behavior of a patient, the health problem being addressed and the population affected by the health problem. In addition, the theory is similar to the past programs which are verified by nursing evidence hence can be confidently used by nurses in solving various issues of leadership. The available evidence in form of past research also share same ideas with the theory thus making it easy to explain , describe and predict a phenomenon of nursing affecting the health care.
