United Nations Millennium Development Goal 5 aims to decrease maternal mortality by three quarters from 1990 to 2015. Severe postpartum bleeding can kill a delivering mother within two hours of delivery if interventions are not implemented immediately to stop the bleeding (WHO, 2013). The topic is of major importance as one of the most easily rectified health issues threatening women in the developed world; it is hoped that this dissertation will contribute to the wider debate on combating gender inequality in these regions. Physicians for Human Rights (2002) showed that in the Afghan province of Herat, the state of individual and community health was often linked to the protection of human rights. This finding exemplifies the importance of the present research on humanitarian as well as medical grounds.
This study is being undertaken because potentially the lives of mothers and infants can be saved, especially in the developing countries where poor medical services are the norm. Establishing remedies which midwives can apply in the community setting to manage PPH is an important part of the health care practice and would be an important contribution of this study.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID, 2009) cites PPH as the most significant cause of maternal deaths worldwide, at about 132,000 deaths yearly. Fawole and colleagues (2010) also discuss that PPH has a prevalence rate of 6% worldwide, with Africa actually having a higher prevalence rata at 10.5%. About 14 million women experience PPH annually (WHO, 1998); of these, about 125,000 die annually (WHO, 1998).
