Review and Critique for Evidence-Based Practice There is no one single way of reviewing and criticizing the work of literature. However, given the fundamental role that evidence-based practice plays in the nursing profession, it is imperative that a critical thinking approach is employed in reviewing and criticizing the work of nursing literature (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2005). Scholars argue that, nursing students and even qualified nurses perceive research as just research, but as an advanced nurse, I will use a step-by-step approach to reviewing and critiquing nursing literature, which I believe can help me demystify the process of the evidence-based practice and decoding of the terminology.

Polit and Beck (2006) argue that, not all research is of the high standard or the same quality and thus, nurses should not just take evidence-based practice at its face value although published. In my review and critique, I will first appraise the limitations and strengths of a given piece of literature to determine its applicability and credibility to the nursing profession (Valente, 2003). A cross-examination of the limitations of the work of literature of the evidence-based practice should thus, not be viewed as a disparagement of the ability of a researcher, but as strength aimed at validating that work of research.

Secondly, I will review the research questions of the evidence-based practice. Valente (2003) argues that, research questions can be sub-divided into credibility variables and integrity variables and thus, used as a critiquing tool for analyzing an evidence-based practice. Therefore, as a nurse, I will review the research questions of the research to determine the credibility and applicability of the practice in the nursing profession e.g. through either the integrity variables, which analyze and evaluate the process of the evidence-based practice or credibility variables, which focus on the background qualifications of the researcher.

It is also important to examine at the literature review of a given evidence based practice to determine whether the practice draws evidence from the literature of recent origin. A viable and reliable evidence-based practice should draw literature evidence from current researches especially from primary sources that are of an empirical nature. A practice can be rendered obsolete, incredible, and inapplicable in the nursing profession if it lacks sufficient backing evidence. In addition, I will cross-examine the theoretical framework of the practice to determine whether an appropriate and adequate conceptual framework was identified to back the practice.

For an evidence-based practice to be relevant and applicable in the nursing profession, it must follow a conceptual framework that is backed with the nursing profession theories.Further, I will examine whether the evidence-based practice considers the ethical considerations of the nursing profession. A practice can only be applicable and credible if it does not contradict the ethical considerations of the nursing profession. Either I will try finding out if ethical permission was given for the study to be carried out or the confidentiality/autonomy of participants guaranteed.

A practice can only be applicable and credible if the participants used in the research of the practice were not coerced to take part in the research. According Valente (2003), nursing practice can be resisted either if it violates the ethical considerations of the nursing profession or the autonomy of the participants involved in the study. In addition, I will look at the advantages and disadvantages of the evidence-based practice. A good nursing practice should be more beneficial to both the patient and the care provider.

For instance, the practice should be easy and affordable to administer. Ultimately, I will examine the methodological background of the nursing literature to determine how the nursing practice was developed. A credible and applicable practice must incorporate all the concepts and the theories that are mentioned in the literature. Therefore, I believe a systematic strategy of critiquing and reviewing a nursing literature is the best strategy.ReferencesMelnyk, B., & Fineout-Overholt, E. (2005).
