Passing of such a law has been a goal of the U.S government for decades. (n.d, 2014) Nursing was the pioneer of all the health professions in the U.S to advocate for the creation of the Medicare program. Despite facing opposition from the hospital and medicine industry, the nursing fraternity did not give up but instead, it united on a common health reform platform, the nursing‘s agenda for health care reform, this was in the 1990s. Their quest was however defeated in 1994. Since then nurses have continued to fight for a law that will bring change and growth in their profession and it was until March this year when president Obama signed the two laws that their dream came true. (n.d, 2014) These laws have introduced complex changes in the nursing sector particularly in the delivery, coverage and payment of health care.

First the laws have established the Medicare Shared Savings Program, the program which according to the law sets out for the formation of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). ACOs will co-ordinate and manage care for the fee-for service Medicare beneficiaries. ACOs will also change the nursing practice in that it will save cost and ensure quality services. (n.d, 2014) These laws also recognize continuity. Continuity is a type of health care that establishes a relationship between a single practitioner and a patient the relationship goes beyond instances of illness.

The two laws also recognizes other concepts such as nurse- managed health clinics and medical homes in medical homes nurses provide their services while in the patient’s residence. Collectively these concepts will with no doubt introduce positive changes in the nursing practice. (n.d, 2014) The nursing colleagues that I gave my presentation saw that the new law would introduce new concepts and mechanisms and would also lead to many people getting medical attention. They therefore concluded that the changes brought by the law were good They also liked the new roles
