A long term smoker has a life expectancy of around ten years less compared to the non smokers. Smoking results to complications such as cancer and other complications of the respiratory system (Bauld, 2013). Apart from cancer cigarette smoking may lead to heart diseases, circulation problems, sexual problems, rheumatic arthritis, ageing, fertility, early menopause, and may increase the risk for optic neuropathy, dementia, cataract, pulmonary fibrosis, gum disease, tooth loss and osteoporosis. Smoking in pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage, may cause still birth and congenital defect such as cleft palate. However smoking cessation may greatly benefit the smoker since the risk of death and other associated diseases is reduced.

The three areas of concern that can be utilized in the smoking cessation program entail; behavioral outcomes, behavior specific cognition and affects and individual characteristics and experiences. The model stipulates that each individual has priority related behavior and unique personal factors that impact on subsequent actions for example actions resulting to smoking versus smoking cessation. Behavior specific cognition and affects entails influences which are either situational or interpersonal, perceptions which involves self efficacy, barrier to actions and benefits to actions (Blacconiere & Oleckno, 2012).. Activity related affects may have significant implication toward motivation targeting behavior change. Behavioral outcomes often end with improved health for example the smoker may accept to quit smoking and take part in other health practices.
