It is important to acquire leadership skills in a nursing training course, as it forms a basis for enabling cooperation and collaboration with other health care personnel to improve health care quality. I believe I possess the best communication skills in relation to my peers. Growing up as a child, I came to learn of the importance of listening as a tool for the development of communication. I thus have a strength with my listening skills that enables me to acquire concrete information and ideas that can be effectively presented to others. However, being timid is my most weakness in relation to communication skills. In as much as I can maintain a concrete communication and presentation to a tiny audience, I find it cumbersome to speak to a large audience or a meeting and a forum, thus making me not to be as articulate as when talking to a small group. ...

In order to get a better understanding of various aspect of leadership and roles of managers in a healthcare institution, I held an interview with Patrick O’Day, the program manager, Healthcare Systems Services at GE Healthcare. The purpose of the interview is to provide demographic information about him, his role and description of healthcare program that he manages.
Leadership can be defined as a process of influencing people within the healthcare setting to accomplish stipulated goals through inspiring of confidence and support among followers. Relentless change in health care organization which continues to influence organization and care delivery has seen leadership become an important skill among all healthcare practitioners (Clark 2008).
The leader understands that an organization cannot operate in isolation as it requires everyone’s participation. The leader ensures that everyone expresses his/her ideas, thoughts, suggestions and opinions about the current state of affairs and the way activities should take place in the future.
Healthcare organizations provide critical leadership at almost all levels from nursing to dentistry, from large healthcare hospitals to domestic health provision (Route, 2008). This plan will develop a personal action plan which will be based on the critical approaches to leadership, analyzing the current trends and the future possibilities, along with demonstrating the reflective and self-analytical skills in order to design a successful action plan for the leadership potential for the next two years.
However, the healthcare profession faces the challenge of embracing theories that are developed outside the profession in setting and applying them in healthcare. However, various studies offer evidence that the leadership initiatives are linked to improved patient care or even organizational outcome when applied within the healthcare sector (Walshe, & Smith, 2011; WHO, 2013).
The author states that in an ideal world, leadership theories should inform leadership development practice. However, the current leadership development programs fail to articulate perspectives on leadership beyond a behaviour and value approach. The concept and practice of leadership has been explained through a wide range and ever growing theories.
