My Philosophy of Nursing

One firmly believes that the nursing profession is filled with challenges due to the basic nature of responsibilities that involve caring for the lives of people. For one to be an effectively competent nurse, the interest in this career should be genuine and innate. In a featured article written by Dossey (2005), the author expounded on the works of Florence Nightingale and averred that as nurses, we should practice the approach the Nightingale promoted: holistic nursing. Through the theories and visions that were learned, one’s personal philosophy of nursing parallels application of holistic nursing by providing direct patient care that ensures all facets of a patient’s illness is duly addressed and comprehensive improvement of the well-being of the patient is one’s paramount aim. Early in one’s stages of development, one had been aware that people’s lives significantly change at the onset of an illness, especially for those diagnosed with chronic diseases. One has empathized with these people: some close family members, other relatives, and nearby neighbors. In personal experiences of illness, the memory of being taken to a health care institution remains vivid.
