Contemporary Nursing Theories: Roy Adaptation TheoryContemporary Nursing Theory Some of the contemporary nursing theories include Roy adaptation theory, which identifies the human body as an open system interacting with external factors of stimuli. The theory presents four models of responses to environmental stimuli, which require attention during nursing intervention; self-concept group identity, physiological-physical, role function and interdependence. Watson's Human Caring Theory outline that caring is the unifying focus of nursing practice.

It entails human science orientation to human caring process and experience (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009). Orem's general theory states that nursing is a product of three theories that are interrelated. They include self-care, self-care deficit and nursing systems. This theory holds that individuals can take care of themselves to maintain and promote their wellbeing. These and many others provide adequate guidelines for nursing (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009). The contemporary nursing theories underscore nursing as a profession by providing guidance and direction especially in the structuring of nursing practice, research, and education.

The theories help nurses to understand effective ways of undertaking nursing assessment, evaluation and appropriate intervention (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009). Nursing is made more efficient when there is reliable and valid health data of a patient. These theories provide the rationale and guidelines for accomplishing that. Ascertaining the quality of healthcare is important in as far as nursing is concerned. Contemporary theories help by providing criteria for measuring the quality. The four primary meta-paradigms of nursing include a person, environment, health, and nursing.

The nursing theories provide the framework for nursing research that best understands how to relate the four concepts for better nursing care (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009). In my healthcare setting, all the above factors apply and, contemporary theories and models directly shape my practice as a nurse. They provide the essential knowledge in the profession for active modern nursing. Without them, it would be difficult to understand my nursing practice as a profession.
