Such a patient who refuses to settle for anything less is labeled as ‘demanding’ by most nurses. Thus, nurses get frustrated and usually tend to delay going to such a patient by ignoring the patient’s calls for as long as possible and are sometimes rude to the patient. I, on the other hand, am different from such nurses as I have had a very patient and loving personality ever since I was a child. After my experience in providing care for such patients, I have come to realize that this temperament of mine has strengthened; I can keep attending to the demands of such patients calmly, choosing to ignore their unkind remarks by always keeping a smile on my face and making sure that they are never in any kind of discomfort. My success in handling such patients has encouraged me develop my career as a nurse.
This brings me to another fact I have realized about myself throughout my experience so far of taking care of patients; providing care for others gives me immense joy. I have always wanted to help others cope with the factors causing them pain; seeing a patient’s condition improve due to the amount and quality of my nursing is the best gift I could ask for. My understanding nature makes patients want to confide in me and tell me those medical problems that they were hesitating to tell the doctor-this further helps me provide them with better care and so makes me a happier person. Thus, I have come to recognize that nursing is a profession that is meant for a person like me. Furthermore, my interest in nursing keeps on increasing day-by-day while providing care for my patients. However, confidence in what I have learnt is also a skill that is very important in nursing. There are times when my patients or their families ask me to explain certain procedures such as dressing a wound, which items of food to eat or not to eat, how to take the medicines prescribed by the doctor or how to handle health care equipments. In such circumstances, I become a bit nervous and wonder whether there are some details I still have not learnt about. Even though I can always refer to a doctor, I do not want to sit and wonder, at the end of my shift, whether what I did for or told my patients was right or wrong; I want to be certain of what I tell or do for my patients. This is a major reason why I want to continue my education in this profession. Another reason is that as nursing is a science based profession, the procedures of treatment and care are constantly changing and improving. I do not want to just rely on what I have learnt so far- I am aching to keep on increasing my knowledge so that I can be updated on the latest procedures and thus improve the quality of care given to my ...
