?Current Events Asian Americans face issues just like any other minority communities which need to be addressed. Individuals have to first develop a clear understanding of the Asian American culture as well as their social issues as this will assist in solving the issues at hand. Asian American community differs from other communities as individuals tend to develop a strong attachment to their families in extents that other individuals do not understand. In this paper, I will show how Asian- Pacific American Heritage month demonstrates gender privileges at work and thus illuminates inequality. After reading the Asian America Observer (2012), a reader will get the impression that gender inequality is a pressing issue in Asian American culture. The newspaper features many articles about women and gender issues and this shows that they are most prevalent in the Asian American community. Apparently, women have it tough in acquiring descent job opportunities because of gender privileges. These privileges offer men more opportunities than it tends to for women. Asian American Observer has provided a good understanding of the social issues in Asian American culture as well as the current events that affect Asian Americans. The observer has included several publications that show the community has more social issues relating to gender and women than any other culture. This is seen as a good effort in creating awareness about this community as individuals will understand the culture better therefore make great contributions in bringing about change (Asian America Observer, 2012). A sense of racial solidarity has been noted in the Asian culture since they have a family orientation in the Asian American community. This matter however does not hide the fact that social issues regarding gender and women are prevalent in Asian American culture. Evidence about gender privilege can be obtained in the work setting as well as in other fields such as politics where men continue to enjoy dominating positions. This issue has been identified to make great contributions towards occurrence of other social issues in the community (Asian America Observer, 2012). More evidence of gender privileges in the community can be seen in instances where more opportunities are awarded to men in terms of good education up to the higher levels. Men are also more likely to get well paying jobs in high civil positions. There is a stereotype in the Asian American culture where men are believed to be more productive than women. Men will therefore receive more challenging responsibilities compared to women in the work environment. The observer has shown how gender privileges put women at a huge disadvantage as they are left to compete for the degrading and poor paying jobs (Asian America Observer, 2012). They tend to suffer as they are forced to labour under poor conditions. It has also been noticed that men are more likely to benefit from programmes developed for employees in the work environment compared to women. This shows there is limited access of women to training as well as preparation for other opportunities in the place of work. The event had an aim of raising Asian American cultural sensitivity to ensure women are not sidelined at work and should benefit from opportunities that arise in the work place as much as men do. It is believed that gender equality will offer opportunities to both men and women therefore make better contribution towards team effort. The current event aimed at moving towards the development of Asian America as a community. It stated clear goals and objectives that would contribute in empowering members of the community, especially women. It had been noted that Asian Americans from Philippines, China, Korea and Japan used to work in farm plantations as most of them lacked formal education. The event had an aim of bringing together all Asian Americans so that they can educate individuals who are in the community as well as outside to make Asian Americans realize the real meaning of their culture. This would help individuals inside and outside the community to get an understanding about their cultural roots, family histories and they will also be able to get formal job opportunities. One way that was adopted by the event in changing the situation of gender privileges in work is that men were made to realize that more opportunities were being offered to them compared to women. This was seen as a great effort that would bring about positive changes in the Asian American culture as more women would be able to get good opportunities in terms of education and job. This will make great contributions towards solving the issue of social inequality that exists in Asian American culture (Asian America Observer, 2012). Changes are evident in the community since women now hold high office positions. A good example is seen in Secretary Chao, who has been appointed to high offices. Being a great leader, she has obtained the powers needed to make changes in her own Asian American community. Secretary Chao’s involvement in politics will enable her change other social issues existing in Asian community. There has been a series of internal tensions in Asian American culture and this has been brought about by efforts of various activists aimed towards producing a sense of racial solidarity. These activists framed social issues such as gender privileges. Their works payso much attention to the experiences of women in their day to activities, for instance in the work environment. Asian American women were given little or no attention in the work place since they were almost invisible in their community. They did not get job opportunities in major companies. Efforts of the activists have enabled women to become more visible in the work environment and in their communities at large. Organizations nowadays tend to recruit more women as it is believed that they are as productive as men. It has been seen they can play great roles and make huge contributions in work. Organizations also need more women as they can understand the needs of their fellow women as well as individuals of their own culture. Asian Pacific American Heritage month is mainly based on education and service projects as a means of resisting the social injustices rather than directly resisting by protesting or rioting. The events activities are therefore supported by conservative and mainstream institutions that believe this as a good approach to oppose social injustices. This support from other institutions enabled Asian American women to get good job opportunities and fair treatment in the work setting (Asian America Observer, 2012). In conclusion, Asian American Observer has provided a comprehensive reflection regarding the issue of gender and women in the Asian American community. The observer entails various publications that show gender privileges in the work environment. The event has played a great role of trying to create equality among all individuals regardless of one’s gender.
