22 January, My response to mates You are absolutely right! I totally agree with you. In fact that is exactly what I have said in response to the situation. Standing up for her faith would not have benefited the Jewish community. All it could have done was deprive the underground escape group of a potential helper, who could not only help them escape the land, but also save the life of many others by retrieving secret information from her master. Therefore, there is nothing in your response that I feel like disagreeing with.

And yes, she is already being virtuous by helping the underground escape group. That is indeed, in itself, a very risky job to do. 2. Your perspective is right, but your interpretation is slightly controversial. I agree with you that by remaining silent, she is doing a right thing. However, you must realize that she will be in no less pain if she gives a “shut up” call to the bookstore owner for humiliating her religious beliefs. Whether she speaks up, or she remains silent, she is bearing pain either way and is being courageous and virtuous as long as her intention is to save other Jews that depend upon her for help. 3. You have provided a very comprehensive analysis of either of the two decisions, the lady could have made, and have rightly justified the benefits of remaining silent in comparison to opening up.

However, I do not agree with you when you tend to make the lady join the bookstore owner in his malicious intentions and wording against the Jewish community, be that apparent or for a positive reason ultimately. As the case explains, the lady is only a low level worker at the bookstore. Therefore, if she tries to let the owner know that she holds similar views about Jews, it will only make the owner suspicious about her. He would think, “Why is she stressing her stance against Jews so much, she must be one of them and is doing so to let me know that she is not!

”I think the lady should silently spy on the owner without giving him even the tiniest sign of her association with Jews. Only then, she can continue helping them. I grant that it does seem appealing to let one know your stance so that one never suspects you for a certain matter, yet I maintain that two people should never discuss their intrinsic beliefs, views and opinions unless they share the same class and background. Otherwise, it only creates problem for the one who is at the loosing end. 4. I find your response the most appropriate among all I have read so far!

I agree to you that by revealing her identity, she not only risks her own life but is also likely to be investigated for the whereabouts of the underground escape group. Not many people have realized this fact apart from the possible assassination of the lady if she chooses to speak up. I also agree that if the lady can not control her emotions, she had better leave the job.
