Summary
Part (c) The ground conditions in the area where this house is to be built are of firm clay underlain by chalk at a depth of approximately 1m below ground level. Explain why a trench fill foundation would be appropriate in this location. Answer: A trench fill foundation is the answer to such a problem, primarily there are two reasons of the selection of trench fill which are, firstly presence of chalk at such a shallow depth (1m), this is a clear indicative of the possibility of interaction of water with the foundation as chalk has a higher porosity value than other soil, eventually it can be concluded that its water conductivity is alarming and if there is a rise in water table, the chalk wi…

The second reason is that we have firm clay above chalk, and as we are sure that the chalk will provide medium to water and we are also aware that clays have expansive properties and they swell when the interact with water. Hence the possibility of swelling and bulging of soil is appreciable. The ordinary foundations will have differential movement upwards and downwards, incase the soil bulges on interaction of water and Subsidence of its absence. Therefore creating differential settlement and stress in the superstructure. So in order to solve the issue we use a trench fill which normally is having a concrete/reinforced concrete block which applies force to counteract to the uplift pressure created by clays on swelling, whereas at the same time concrete being highly compact and non-porous does not allow water to move in to the superstructure and due to these reason the trench fill is the only cost effective solution to the geotechnical problem faced. ... A Trench Fill Foundation
Research suggests that “trench fill foundations are quicker to prepare than deep strip foundations. This means that there is less disruption once the building work starts and not as much labour time will be needed. It is less likely that subsidence will occur in cases where there may be changes in the soil's substrata.

Fallacy: Slippery slope (Bassham et al.) Here the conclusion is that since Lindsey chose going back to university instead of school, the damage to the relationship is severe and irreversible. After all they were happy as a couple before that, but by abandoning the main role of the woman, which is to be a mother, the woman essentially ruined the relationship (Bassham et al.) The argument here is that an action that Lindsey took directly led to the series of events that led to the happiness of the couple being broken, in what the arguer describes as a downhill event.
