CHAPTER DISCUSSION This chapter provided me with a great deal of food for thought. I considered my own position in the world in a very different way after reading this chapter. The ideas it provided still percolate in my brain. The truth is that our identities are more malleable than we think…
So many of the things around us are constructed by our own preconceptions, but it is harder to understand how we too are a product of things beyond our control. Our roles and identities are shaped by those around us, where we come from, and we are going. All of this made the chapter an excellent and sustaining read. This reading made me very introspective. It led me to reconsider my own life and my own multiple identities. I began to try to unwind some of the strands of my personality which had led me to see myself in a certain, stable way. I began to think about how much I had changed over the years and in what direction. I have always felt that I had a lot of control over my own life and that I was master of my own destiny. But now, having read this chapter, I realize how much of everyone's lives are in flux. It is a very useful point to consider how much differences can get in the way of us recognizing how truly different some people are. The point about the French girl's uniqueness struck a chord with me. She was so different in the small community that people had a hard time getting to know her as an individual. We must be careful not to overlook such things. ...

Strong management is a crucial point in success along with team members who are capable of working together and working with management. While a leader is not the only aspect of an effective team, a leader cannot be apathetic leaving the team without a path to follow or an example, but rather a leader must provide an environment in which members can work and grow.
I liked the contents and information presented in the chapter because of the relevance of the issues discussed and the applicability and importance of being aware of the theoretical framework to ensure better understanding in communication across borders.
The objective of this essay, though, is to provide a reaction after reading the chapter which addresses the following concerns, to wit: (1) what one understands; (2) what is liked and not like about the chapter; and most importantly, (3) what one learn about oneself after reading the chapter (something that one just discovered).
It was interesting to read about how we tend to confirm our own prejudices by choosing which information to process, and only filtering validating information. Moreover, I really agree with the premise that there is no such thing as a “positive” stereotype.
To deal with conflict is a very complex issue, and this chapter starts by explaining various ways in which conflict can be handled by people in time of adverse circumstances. It is very informative to know that Japanese accept the avoiding approach to handle conflict related issue, which I think is the best way to suppress the heat in conflicting scene.
Different terms were discussed, accompanied with sample scenarios to point out exactly the legitimacy of each claim, and all are easily comprehensible. As ethics is a topic of serious complexity, the author is to be commended for reaching out to the audience and stressing out points of view that relate to situations that we commonly encounter.
