The magnitude of this problem is not just encompassing one city, but all over the world. In places like Australia and Cape Town, Africa, the numbers are only increasing. Hundreds of thousands of violent behavior cases are reported every year worldwide, and this situation shows no signs of slowing down. In nursing school, students are taught how to work with patients, but not how to handle a potentially dangerous situation. Nothing prepares them for the angry, suicidal, or panicked patients who go beyond the behaviors expected of them. “Nurses practice in many settings, including hospitals, schools, homes, retail health clinics, long-term care facilities, battlefields, and community and public health centers.” (Institute of Medicine, 2010). Because nurses practice in so many different places, their well-being and safety can be easily compromised. When it comes to the IOM recommendations, this isn’t properly acknowledged. These recommendations talk of education, training, and residency programs, but fail to mention anything in regard to staying safe in the work place. There is a very real disconnect between what is being taught now, and what needs to be taught. In the United States alone, “nearly 500,000 nurses each year become victims of violent crimes in the workplace.” (Hilton, 2010). ...

Workplace Bullying Workplace bullying refers to repeated, unreasonable actions of individuals (or a group) directed towards an employee (or a group of employees), which are intended to intimidate, degrade, humiliate, or undermine; or which create a risk to the health or safety of the employee(s) (Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, p.1) Workplace bullying is nothing but misuse of power in which powerful people in an organization try to dominate weaker ones.
Workplace Bullying Introduction Workplace bullying is the tendency for individuals or groups to use persistent aggressive or unreasonable behavior against a co-worker or subordinate. This means that there is someone or somebody that being placed on the spotlight but at this time the mere theme for it is much offensive for the subject for the pleasure of the bullying person or group bullies.
Heinz Leymann is considered a pioneer in the field of bullying concerning adults. He used the term “mobbing” in his works. This term was also used by Konrad Lorenz in 1966 to talk about aggression among birds and animals. An example of mobbing among adult humans would be forcing an employee out of an organization.
Since workplace bullying research involves the investigation of the attitude and feeling of employees as individuals, the researchers may choose to employ different methods to uncover the facts so that they can form a meaningful idea about the workplace bullying phenomenon.
Workplace interpersonal hostility can dramatically impact on employee job satisfaction and well being, for victims, bullies and bystanders (Mikkelsen & Einarsen, 2001). Further, workplace bullying can incur high costs for organisations due to increases in employee absenteeism, high turnover over personnel, and decreased employee motivation and productivity, and perhaps even poor publicity for the organisation (Hoel, Einarsen & Cooper, 2003).
