The main differences between short stories and poems is sound. All good writing should roll off the tongue, but in poetry sound is especially important as a poem is usually meant to be read aloud. There are a number of poetic devices such as alliteration that are used in poetry which would be out of place in a short story. Poems are part of a larger oral tradition. Short stories are a newer invention which are meant to be consumed in solitude and usually read silently. Short stories often follow a formula that poems do not. Poems need not have a plot or characters, while it is hard for stories that do not have these things to be understood by readers. When a reader sits down to read a story they generally know what they are getting into, but this is not always the way with poems. However, there are similarities between the two forms. Both use language to create an effect on the reader. Their authors want to communicate something important and timeless to their audience and they want to use well chosen and powerful words to do so. In my opinion, poems are works of art that show you something about your everyday life that you don't realize. They do this by using a lot literary devices to sneak past your defences. Richard Wilbur's poem “Boy at the Window” is a good example of this. The form and devices of the poem effect the reader's experience of the work. ...

Darlyn struggles to balance between raising her daughter, loving a married woman, working at a home depot, and repeatedly coming to the rescue of her alcoholic mother (Anshaw 3). ‘Occupational hazard’ is a short story written by Angela Pneuman. The story is metaphorical in every sense.
In effect, these works articulated the emotions that made us distinctly human. The manner it is articulated may differ and the symbols used varied but they made the narration compelling that enabled the reader to feel what the poets are trying to convey. Whitman first explored how human commune with his environment that provided life and support for man to live.
It is through literature that writers and poets alike communicate various messages to the general public about the evils of not only the society they live in, but also the societies all around the world that they may have experienced. Despite its “Declaration of Independ ence”1 in the year “1776,”2 America was still not a fully free country until two centuries later.
