In America, it is estimated that guns claim eighty-four (84) lives and wound about two hundred (200) people every day (“Gun Violence” 1). In a year, more than thirty thousand individuals (30,000) die, (three thousand of which are children and teens) and over seventy thousand (70,000) are injured due to gun violence (“Gun Violence” 1). Based on this finding, guns are mostly used to execute homicide. Others used the gun to perform robbery and other petty crimes. This fact is very alarming considering that America is a high-income and industrialized country (Fontana and Keene 6). It is even considered by other states as a hegemonic and strong state. This description connotes that US has a strong mechanism with regard to its security. It is usually expected that a financially stable country could responsibly address social problems such as gun violence and crimes. Nevertheless, this is not happening in the United States today. It has been found out that America’s firearms death rate is nearly eight times higher compared to the gun-related death rate of other high-income countries in the world (“Gun Violence” 1). This fact implies that the American government has not been effective in deterring the proliferation of guns within its society. ...

The paper presents that the debate over guns that is not likely to disappear in the near future nor does it seem to reach a mutual agreement. The advocates are passionate on both sides and have a strong standing on their viewpoint. The government has drafted out several laws to suppress guns but the question Do gun- control laws work cannot be answered.
While statistical evidence demonstrates that many countries where stringent gun control has been enacted do have relatively low murder rates, it’s also accurate that the murder rates in these countries was already low before the gun control mechanisms were enacted.
Those who are in favor of gun ownership argue that the same can protect the civilians from aggression. On the other side, those who are in favor of gun control argue that gun control can reduce violence in the society. Still, modest restrictions on civilian gun ownership prove that the same cannot guarantee the lives of civilians in general.
The problem is the lack of gun control while the real issue of gun control is deeper than it seems. It is actually an issue that is beset by several political obstacles as well as an inefficient enforcement of the current gun laws. Nevertheless, in order to put an end to the killings, there should be gun control measures in the United States and these measures should be strictly enforced by the federal government.
The very idea of gun reflects a sign of danger and a common man feels endangered whenever he confronts a gun. It has been witnessed that the Americans have been in possession of private guns more than any developed economies. At present more than one-third of the American households possess a working firearm.
Currently, both the national and state governments have provisions concerning gun ownership. However, there is a diverse opinion of states over the issue. Some states lack any form of regulation while others have stringent gun control laws. Although the gun control laws came into place in order to curb murder rates, an analysis into the realistic data reveals otherwise.
