Initial Memories in Art School When I was in Korea, I vaguely remember any prominent recount of attending an art One thing I remember was a field trip to a park. My teacher and classmates rode a school bus to a park called “Olympic”. It was my personal contention that I was not any good at drawing, so I did not like the class much. However, I remunerated that I had so much fun in the field trip because we were given the privilege to choose any objects or background that we want to draw. I drew my friend’s face and formed a mosaic from cut papers pasted on the picture.

Although my drawing was not good, my teacher was really impressed about my art creation. The encouragement and praise that I received from my teacher reinforced the experience in my memory and I considered the field trip a fun and worthwhile event. Usually, we had to follow what the teacher commands in Korea, so the field trip was a special experience due to the privilege of choosing whatever we could creatively do. When I enrolled in an art class in Canada, I was so surprised because the teaching style was so free.

I took visual art class because I was more interested in personal expression rather than just drawing. My teacher, ‘Ms. Libera’ was so kind and supportive that I surely remembered her name as she always encouraged me to have fun in the class. One day, our class project entailed painting a small decorative box. I painted the box in yellow color, and drew many fruits on it. Likewise, we used plasters as art material and were so excited because it was the first time for me to use this medium.

As we tried to create different things, my enthusiasm was enhanced and further encouraged. I ended up getting a perfect mark in the class which boosted my confidence. It proved that I have creative potentials and artistic abilities that were honed and developed through positive encouragement and appropriately acknowledging my talent. I am really greatly thankful to my teacher and art mentor. I realized that teaching style and the holistic support of a teacher is very important for a student. The video that we saw ‘Children’s Book’ by author Peter Reynolds showed us how teachers should inspire children to do their best.

Reynolds averred that he shows kids his drawing to encourage and enhance artistic potentials. Likewise, he emphasized that teachers should encourage kids to be more creative, innovative and to think outside the box. I think this method really works and inspires children to do their best and to have fun and enjoy the class. When I become a teacher, I envision encouraging students to enjoy the class without many restrictions. I believe students can be more creative if the proper environment and holistic support is accorded to bring out and maximize their full potentials.
