Technology plays an important role in bringing employers and job seekers on one platform and the ways of recruitment have been modified according to emerging technology from time to time. Today, many big enterprises make use of software for the formulation of job descriptions, job advertisements, response management, short-listing, selection of analytical methods, arrangement and conduction of interviews, and final selection. Thus, the reliance upon technology or recruitment agencies to assess the skills and competencies of candidates has made it easy for managers to select the finest candidates from the pool of applicants. Selection of the right individuals for the right positions is true, the first step of workforce management.

Management of the existing workforce, may, however, be adversely affected by the recruitment of new employees. Workforce management is a skill and art that requires much more than a manager’s conscious efforts to satisfy the workforce and improve its morale. Workforce management involves addressing issues related to the workforce, resolving interpersonal conflicts, improving the rapport among workers, addressing their queries regarding promotion and job benefits, and assigning the most suitable set of responsibilities to individual workers that accord with their natural talents. To do the job, managers need to earn the confidence of workers. The workers need to be made to feel that they are important to the organization and that the organization would not betray them in any way at any time.

Recruitment is often seen by the existing workers of a firm as a potential threat to their job security. When a new employee is hired, the existing pattern of power distribution in the hierarchy of organizational structure is jeopardized. Many feel their position is at stake as a result of the changes brought about by the newly recruited individual. Circumstances become particularly threatening for elderly employees with limited technological expertise and knowledge of the latest software and market trends. “Demand for specific talent is increasing rapidly as employers require specialist skill sets that are becoming scarce” (Dew cited in Bayside Group, 2010). Considering the past trends, a lot of executive positions have been assigned to young talented individuals with knowledge of technology. In simple words, the existing workforce requires psychological counseling to have the employees embrace the changes expected to result from the recruitment of new members. Gaining the confidence of existing workers is also conducive to the adjustment of the new employee in the organizational culture. Read More
