Isolationism is a policy in which a country inhibits its involvement with other world affairs. This usually applies only to political and global policy affairs and does not include economic matters. In this manner, a country can focus a majority on internal affairs operating outside the global context of other countries. After dealing with World War I and the Great Depression, the United States was focused on internal matters. The Atlantic Ocean separated the United States and Hitler, there fore the American government and US citizens felt that this was a conflict for Europe to settle and the United States had no reason to become directly involved.

Currently, the United States does not favor a policy of isolationism. The United States is the last superpower in the world and is what gives the United Nations, a multination peacekeeping operation, and the majority of its power. In addition, the United States is actively engaged in peacekeeping operations in the Middle East. The Allied Powers held the conference. The conference was a success in that it established the terms for what became known as an unconditional surrender. Roosevelt and Churchill pushed this.

The reason it became important for the dropping of the atomic bomb is because by delivering such as devastating blow to Japan, it forced them to ultimately accept the losses and withdraw from the war and conflict with the US.
