Toward a Resolution: Situational Ethics  ¦Situational ethics:  ?There are basic principles of right and wrong.  ?These can be applied to ethical dilemmas and moral issues.  ?These principles may call for different results in different situations, depending on the needs, concerns, relationships, resources, weaknesses, and strengths of the individual actors.  ¦Situational ethics is different from relativism because absolute norms are recognized, whereas under relativism there are no norms.

¦Some example of absolute norms are  ?Treat each person with the utmost respect and care.  ?Do one’s duty(ies) in such a way that one does not violate the first principle.  Utilizing situational ethics site a real world situation where you acted with the utmost ethics and integrity and give reasons why you took those actions.  Utiizing situational ethics site a real world situation where you did not act with the utmost ethics and integrity.  2) Perez who was at the center of the scandal].

The NYPD also was victimized by corrupt police inthe early 1990's which was investigated by the "Mollen Commission". Please upload your answer to the Dropbox detailing how you would try to eliminate, or at least limit, the types of police corruption which we have seen recently in LA, NYC, New Orleans and other large cities.  Eliminating police corruption is initiated through core policies that one must embed in the culture of ethics core of a police department. The goal is to understand that the goal of the police department is to protect and serve the community.

Embedding these core values such as: honesty, integrity, and moral responsibility will facilitate in reducing crime. However, I do think at times that the police officers have their “hands tied” in tense situations. Police officers are required to take necessary protocols before trying 3)Parole Dilemna:  You are a parole officer who has a single mother with three hyperactive, attention deficit-disorder young children on your caseload. She receives no support from her ex-husband. Her mother wants nothing to do with her or the children because she believes “God is punishing” the young mother.

She works as a topless dancer but hates it. She continues dancing because it pays the bills so well. You know she regularly smokes marijuana in an attempt to deal with stress. Obviously, this is a violation of probation. However, if you file a violation report on her, she will go back to prison. You know she is doing the best she can with her kids, is very involved with their school, and they are strongly bonded to her. You worry about what will happen to the kids. What would you do?  •By violating her parole wouldn't you cause her to have a bigger problem?

It is sad to say I would parole her. She already has enough problems to deal with but being a topless dancer and smoking marijuana is unethical. I think the best bet is to try to find her another occupation along with placing in a a stress-free environment. In addition, there has to be an effort to try to deter her from her marijuana addiction. The kids would be placed in a safer environment, where they would be taken care in a more effective and healthier manner. •Are the children in danger?

Yes her children are in absolute danger as their mother has a drug addiction, which can go out of hand. If her mother overdoses, the children will suffer. It also is a horrible example for the kids to see their mother doing drugs and being a topless dancer. The kids already have a condition which makes it worse if the mother overdoses in marijuana and then is unable to pay the bill.s. •If the mother is violated might the kids become wards of the state?  Yes the children will be in deep scrutiny.

However for the long run, it is for the best. The kids can still visit their mothers from an orphanage. Even though putting the kids in an orphanage is not always a great idea especially with the ADHD situation. However, we live in a society where there are millions of resources and funding for kids with special needs. Since the mother has no love for the kids, it is better for them to find a new home. •You must weigh your decision on numerous factors that are realistic and not out of the book.

What would you do?  Well, the main concern is about the kids who have a special need. The kids are important because they are innocent and naive and must not be hurt in any manner. The second factor that is considered is the fact that the lady does not care about her kids. If she understood her moral obligation, she would try to find other channels or at least consider asking for help. Moreover, her addiction to an illegal drug is dangerous as it can lead to abuse and death possibly. Clearly, the children cannot afford to lose their mother at this stage. 4)Situation 1  You are a prison guard supervising a tier.

One of the inmates comes to you and asks a favor. Because he is a troublemaker, his mail privileges have been taken away. He wants you to mail a letter for him. You figure it’s not such a big deal; besides, you know he could make your job easier by keeping the other inmates on the tier in line. What would you tell him?  I would tell him to be patient although in my opinion that’s another road block. The issue here is the fact that he will never break away from his bad habits. Thus, that is why he is in jail in the first place.

Giving him a privilege that he was entitled to before but lost his is his own harm to himself. He should be more aware of the ramifications of his acts. •Realize that by taking his letter and mailing it you will be violating prison work rules and you could be subjected to disciplinary action, would you still take the chance?  No I would not take the chance. Why jeopardize my chance of losing a job when this inmate clearly is immature and indulged in childish behavior? My best option would be to talk to him and tell him to be patient.

If the inmate had no history of his immature acts, I would consider mailing the letter for him. •You must also realize that this is a form of corruption that could escalate by having the inmate ask you for more serious breaches of inmate policy, would you still mail the letter? Undoubtedly, that is the consequence of breaching the law. Furthermore, it is illogical to allow to have this type of privilege as he will abuse it. Moreover, it gives him an opportunity to blackmail the parole officer, which could destroy the hierarchy in the jail.

The inmate policies are designed to keep the inmate in a disciplined environment in which they must earn their benefits that they lost due to their poor choices.
