Plasma membrane regulates selective movement of substances in and out of the cell. Ribosomes are the sites in the cell where protein synthesis takes place while lysosomes ingest or break down the worn out cellular organelles intracellularly 2. During rainy/wet season, brown grasshoppers will be eaten more than the green ones because they (brown) are not camouflaged in a green environment. Therefore, the brown grasshoppers will decrease in numbers while the green ones will multiply. In case of drought, the green grasshoppers will be eaten more than the brown because they(green) are not well camouflaged in a predominantly brownish environment. Hence during drought, the population of brown grasshoppers will increase. 3. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) consists of deoxyribose sugar while ribonucleic acid (RNA) consists of ribose sugar. RNA consists of Uracil, cytosine, guanine and adenine as a nitrogenous bases while DNA has thymine, adenine, guanine and cytosine nitrogenous bases. RNA is single stranded while DNA consists of a double chain helix held in a double helix by hydrogen bonds. 4. 4 in covalent bonds, two or more atoms share a pair of electrons in their outermost energy shells, while ionic bond involves a complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another. Ionic bond leads to formation of a charged particle, processing both negative and positive charges while covalently bonded substances are neutral. In addition, covalent bonds are stronger than ionic bonds. 5. Water is a polar solvent because it consists of dipole moments at both ends of the molecule. The dipole moment creates partial negative charge and positive charge at the opposite poles of the molecule. Therefore, both charges in the water molecules are capable of attracting the opposite charged poles (ends) of other polar and ionic substances, which dissolve in the process. Hence, water is a universal solvent for both the charged and polar substances. 6. The sale of the house from Mr. Smith to Mr. Jones is analogous to ionic bond because it involves a complete transfer of ownership from Mr. Smith to Mr. Jones. Mr. Smith does no longer claim partial ownership from Mr. Jones. The arrangement is similar to ionic bonds because it is formed by complete transfer of electrons from one atom to the other. The sharing of the house between the two men is therefore similar to covalent bonding. 7. Simple diffusion is movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration. Diffusion is a type of passive transport that does not require use of energy and it continues until a uniform concentration between the two surfaces is achieved. Active transport involves the movement of substances across a cell membrane from a region of low concentration to a region of higher concentration. The process requires energy in form of ATP and it involves special proteins called carriers that transport the particular substances across the membrane and against concentration gradient. 8. . Diffusion is essential in the body because it ensures maintenance of a relatively uniform Internal environment in the cellular surroundings. This ensures that the cells perform optimally, by obtaining the relevant substances ...Show more
