The story about my friend Ali “They’re my friends, and I want to play with them!” I said to my mother as she put me to bed and curtly said, “A young girl plays with other girls and her dolls.” At the young age of four when I was carefree and played with the neighbourhood children, my religion did not permit me to do so because I was not allowed to play with boys. My parents grew up with the mentality of not associating oneself with a person belonging to the other gender and thus my school life as well as friend circle soon became separated. They always made sure that I was not mingling with boys because they were afraid of what the elders in the family would say. I was however born with a rebellious streak and this made me meet my male friends at a place, the rock-side park that we had designated for this purpose. (Appositive) It was peaceful, cheerful and had a wonderful scent to it, and my only goal at the time was to change people’s mindsets, despite being so young, with regard to accepting the fact that girls and boys can be friends. Soon, among all my friends, I grew to have a close bond with Ali. Ali and I grew to be very attached to each other as we would always play together and go for walks. I shared every thought with him and both of us were teased by all our other friends. “You both are going to end up getting married one day!” one of them would remark. “And then you will have little babies to play with!” another would add childishly. Ali and I always laughed these taunts off because at the time we did not understand the concept of marriage. We would often walk to the candy store, team up in games together and share our problems and achievements with each other. As time passed, our relationship grew into a very strong bond of friendship that no one could break. Ali was always protective of me and watched out for me. We stuck to each other during the good and the bad times and grew to become extremely fond of each other. While playing games, Ali and I would always side together in teams and defeat the others. Our friends would always tell us, “Both of you make an excellent pair!” Soon though, my family, including myself, relocated to the United States of America, and at that time, I was apprehensive of the relationship that shared with Ali. Till the time that we were together, things were good for us however, we had never given any thought to what life would be like without the other person around. We did not realise that we had grown so close to each other that it was impossible to spend some time apart. As Ali and I both entered our teens, we used to spend nights talking to each other on the phone, and our parents and friends knew that there was something special between us. I however, remained naive to that fact and would take all my problems to Ali. He would answer patiently, “Look inside yourself, you’ll find the answer soon.” So when it was time to move, I asked him, “What will happen to us?” and I recall that he said the same thing, in the calmest manner possible. Fortunately, Ali and I did not have to grow apart because he soon followed me to America, but to fulfil his dreams of becoming a medical surgeon. I was overjoyed that Ali would once again be by my side, but despite the closeness being reinstated, I always felt that Ali thought of me as his little sister. That was what I told myself when he was always nice to me. This was probably because I felt this way about all my other male friends too and did not know how to think differently of him even though I always knew that he and I shared something completely out of the ordinary with each other. I never bothered to segregate the relationship that I shared with Ali into something different than what I had for everyone else around me. Soon, the time came for Ali to express himself to my friends by telling them the inevitable – the fact that he had feelings for me. My friends, Natasha and Rustam, however always knew this to be true because they knew about our history together and how he was extremely protective about me. (Appositive) I on the other hand, never was able to put the pieces together and figure this simple thing out because I always felt as if Ali was just there, as my guardian angel, always looking out for me. We had common likes, dislikes and shared a wonderful history that not many people had with each other and my friends told me later that they always knew Ali and I were meant to be together. Yet, Ali did not confess his feelings to me as early as he found out that he had them. At the time, he was working very hard so that he could be one of the top medical surgeons in California and I was working on my career as well, trying to make something out of myself. (Subordinate clause) I soon received a call from Ali. “I need to talk to you about something important,” he said to me. Somehow, my heart began to race and I knew that it was only a matter of time till I avoided what was going to happen next. I was not being able to understand why I was feeling the way that I was, but when Ali told me that he loved me, I was in shock. I did not say anything because I was trying to absorb it all in, and at the same time I did not object to the same because somewhere deep down even I knew that I treated him differently than all the other friends and had something special for him as well. Nonetheless, I told Ali that I needed some time to figure things and out and he turned out to be extremely supportive. He said with a smile, “I will always be there like I have been. If I need to travel to another country to be with you, I will just like I did America. And I will wait for you forever if I have to.” We got to talking and agreed to take things slowly because we were afraid to ruin the friendship that we had built for ourselves over the last many years. I was further shocked when Ali told me that he would help me raise both the children that I had given birth to from another man, as his own and to me. Ali has always been strong throughout the worst obstacles that he has had to encounter during the course of his lifetime, while being there for me. Since the time that we both got into a relationship with each other, he has been even stronger for the both of us and that has made me feel extremely happy because I always knew that there was something between us but was too scared to admit it. He is a beautiful man inside and I have always admired him for the way he takes everything in his stride. I feel Ali deserves the position he is in today because of his diligence and kindness. Every single day he has continued to teach me that he will always be there, as my boyfriend, so that he may support me throughout the weakest and the strongest points in my life. (Subordinate clause) As people I feel that we have a natural intuition to protect our own feelings and emotions with regard to our relationships. Ali and I did not know that our friendship would last more than a decade before leading to love and a relationship, but it did, and because of this, I have always had a hunch that our relationship is going to be special till the end of our time on Earth together. The best part about us has always been that no matter what the situation, we have always been able to sort things out between the both of us. In all the years that we have been friends, I haven’t felt closer to anyone else. (Participle) As far as our current relationship goes, we are satisfied about where we are and will only think of marriage once we have accomplished our goals and my children are old enough to understand that we love each other. Despite having had experienced so much in my life, the most powerful and amazing thing has been being truly in love with my best friend. (Participle) I feel that I can accomplish anything with the support of my boyfriend to back me up no matter what.  I have learned to have an open mind, great values, and most importantly trust.   Recently, Ali said to me, “We will continue to grow strong through all the things God challenges us with.  I believe that everything happens for a reason and as long as we continue to do what we do things will only get better from here on out.  I have come to realize that the happiest day of my life was when you told me that you loved me back more than just a friend.” His words made me cry and understand that he has truly changed my life and has also changed me as a person by teaching me the true meaning of life and love.   Read More
