After acquiring new social roles during young adulthood, existing roles are maintained and strengthened in this phase. It is the stage when prominent physical, cognitive, and social challenges are faced by adults (Newman & Newman, 2011). Physically, adults show signs aging through wrinkling of skin, obesity, thinning of hair, and weakened muscle strength (Newman & Newman, 2011).
But human development proceeds further to early adulthood, middle adulthood and late adulthood at ages 20 to 30s, 35 to 45 through the 60s and 60s to 70s through to death respectively. In the stages covering middle childhood and adolescence, development would be expressed over physical, cognitive and socioemotional domains.
Early and middle adulthood is a period of developmental transition. Psychological, sociological and legal definitions for attaining adulthood vary.
