Ethics, moral principles that define and distinguish wrongs and rights, regulate professions. Its role in the police department is evidence in police officers’ ascription to code of ethics under which their decisions and operations must be based.
Many incidences place police officers in ethical dilemma and lead to questionable decisions and the chase and ultimate shooting of a 19-year-old suspect by the Ames (Iowa) Police Department is an example. This paper reviews the case and utilizes the Tarvydas Integrative Decision-Making Model of Ethical Behavior to identify and analyze ethical choices that were necessary for the law enforcement officers in the incidence. The case identifies many circumstances into ethical dilemma towards implementation of the Tarvydas Integrative Decision-Making Model of ethical behavior. The following are some of the instances in the incidence that induced dilemma (YouTube). The officer attempts to stop the suspect who defies the order and flees from the officers and leading to a pursuit Suspect runs stop sign at intersection and nearly hits another vehicle at the intersection Suspect stops in a residential area and rams the squad car in a reverse mode before speeding off Suspects speeds through a busy intersection in a residential area and does not slow down despite presence of other vehicles and people Suspect heads to a street in college campus that has a lot of pedestrian activity and an abortion of pursuit is called Officers do not terminate pursuit and suspect continues to ram the officers’ car, officers try to corner suspect but attempts fail leading to shootout Identification and analysis of ethical choices ...
