Attempting to establish the very initial event leads to two possibilities: the very first event was caused by someone at the beginning of the universe, or there was not the first event and the series of events stretches back to infinity. The second possibility, however, lacks credibility as the events must have had a beginning and it cannot be attributed to infinity. This is because an argument that the past of the universe is infinite cannot explain the fact that the universe experiences time and can claim a past, present, and future (Weinberg, 265).

If we are left with the possibility that there must have been a beginning, the cause of the beginning must have, therefore, been caused by some being outside the universe, an eternal being with no beginning or end, a being that is not controlled by the forces of the universe. It is this creator that the cosmological argument calls God.

These three religions do not readily accept the existence of a Supreme Being who is responsible for the creation of the universe. Buddhism does not subscribe to the existence of God. Buddhists believe in the inherent wisdom present in human beings which were perfected by Buddha. Although Buddhists believe in superstitions of higher beings and the devil, they do not fully approve of the existence of a single superior being with the authority of the Christian God. Buddhists worship Buddha with a similar amount of zeal and respect as that accorded to God by other religions but deny the existence of God. According to them, the world simply exists and operates by natural power and law, not by divine power (Jewell, 278).

Hindus too do acknowledge the existence of a supreme being, although, for them, the being is not one but many. They, therefore, do not believe in God but in gods. The Hindu gods include Siva, his consort Parvati, Krishna, and Ramacandra. Many households in the Hindu religion have family gods who members ascribe to each due to various family histories and events in the family’s past. The concept of an ultimate God is not common among the Hindus, hence the argument that the religion does not share in the perspective of the existence of God (Seaman, 341).

Taoist belief proposes that one’s quality of life depends on the extent to which one aligns himself with nature, getting closer to the primordial unity of Tao. In this state, one’s life produces happiness and health, the source of the good life. This argument leaves no place for a supreme being; God is the giver and creator of life and the universe (Curtiss, 78).

The belief in the existence of God is widely acclaimed by three popular religions; Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Hinduism believes in the existence of many gods, not the one true God as in the Christian context. Taoism and Buddhism, on the other hand, do confer in any way to God. From the cosmological argument presented, I would say that God truly exists as the creator of the universe. He is a supreme Being controlling all systems of the universe and will conquer evil in the end. Without this conviction, it would be impossible to explain the origin of the universe.
