Ethics and College Student Life : a Case Study Approach

Bod is a scholarship student at a prestigious university. On his visit back home, he feels that a distance has grown between him and his friends, and even with his family. For him, now they all seem like having a small-minded and shabby personality. He feels that they have a habit of stereotyping which he despises. Moreover, he also feels that he doesn’t fit in at school too. He doesn’t have any close friend in the school. For him, everything is different in the school i.e. he feels that at school he has to follow a certain way to dress, talk, eat, and relate to women and to authorities, and hang out at school, and completely different ways to do these things in the neighborhood. It seems that he has to be two different people, and he's less and less sure which (if either) is really him. He worries that he will never be accepted in his new world and he misses the closeness and sense of being able to count on friends.  Question No. 1:  The main problem, the Bob is facing, is who is he? And where does he belong? He is unable to fit neither in the new surrounding nor in the old one. From the perspective of his new surroundings, all the activities carried out by people that he previously knew seem ridiculous and vice versa. He is also faced with the problem of increasing distance between him and his family. ...
Now, he is more self-conscious about himself and about his looks. He is desperate to be accepted in his new surroundings and be treated with the same honor and respect. This is the ethical issue which mostly arises when a college student is raised in a neighborhood where study is not fashionable. In such a situation, one must pull oneself up by his own bootstraps. Question No. 2: This problem is related with more than one area i.e. it is related with self-formation, personal connection and relationships, and also the community. He is passing through the phase of self-formation that is the act of giving form or shape to his self and mostly improving it. Self-formation is not possible without self-identity. Self-identity is knowledge and understanding about one’s own self in relation to one’s likes, dislikes, and belongings. It includes individual's attitudes toward others, habits, beliefs and ideas. Without the knowledge of self-identity, self-formation is not possible. Bob is at a stage when he is less aware of himself. He is having a hard time figuring out where does he belong? He doesn’t know where he fits. He feels that he has to be two different people and he has issues with both of them. Personal connection is the personal and direct linkage with the others. It may be with friends with family with colleague, etc. The personal connection mostly turns into a relationship depending upon its intensity. In the form of relationship it has the feeling of love, affection, closeness etc. Bod is having problems in personal connection and relationship as he noticed that the distance between him and his family has grown. He is facing a problem of what to talk about. His friends and family also now comment that he seems different now. Question No. 3: ...Show more
