Philosophy Philosophy I believe that gay and lesbian marriages should be recognized as legal marriages and they should enjoy all the benefits that are legally awarded to straight married couples. I hold this belief because if I believe that people should accept behavior and conduct those behaviors that they themselves are ready to accept in the same situation or any other situation. This means that I can only regard Gay and Lesbian marriages as illegal if I am ready to accept that marrying an individual from the opposite sex is even illegal.

Since opposite sex individuals are recognized as legally married, same should be accepted for Lesbian and Gay married couples. This belief is consistent with the ideas of categorical imperative presented by Immanuel Kant (White, 2009, p.47). According to this philosophical concept, the maxim or the reason for conducting an action or taking a decision should be that the person taking that action is ready to accept the same action conducted against him or same decision taken against him in the same situation or any other situation.

This means that policy makers can only recognize gay marriages as illegal only if they are ready to accept same treatment if they themselves enter into a gay relationship and even if they are ready to accept the same decision in a straight relationship. I am quite influenced by Immanuel Kant and his philosophy because I believe that individuals should analyze an action by applying the same action to themselves and analyzing whether they themselves will accept that action or not.
