COUNSELING When I knew I had to do a presentation, I had mixed feelings. I was keyed up and for the equivalent reason worried because I had never done a presentation before. I was worried about how the presentation would go, since I had no earlier experiences. This made me quite anxious and wanted o make sure that I had all I needed to make the presentation a success in the end. I felt good that I would have to share whatever information I had with the group, but I was also wondering how I was going to do that exactly given that I did not know what people would say about me and my presentation. I was quite anxious because I was afraid of being ridiculed if I did not perform as well as I had hoped1. On the other hand, I was ready to learn on how to prepare and deliver a presentation. Yes, I had my fears, but I also wanted to prove myself wrong with reference to failing. I wanted to make sure that failure to deliver my first presentation exceptionally was merely an impediment to future presentations, which I might just end up delivering effortlessly. I felt that there was always an initial time for everything, and this was my first time to deliver a presentation. I chose the topic of Domestic Violence by first thinking about what kind of issue I wanted to deal with generally2. I had a number of considerations, for instance, the issue for me had to be a problem that takes place in society and most probably involves what I have personally experienced or people I know have experienced. I wanted to get a topic that I was interested in since I knew that the research process would have been more relevant if I cared about the topic I chose. I also desired to pick something, which I wanted to learn more about making it easier to complete and more meaningful to me3. I started my search for topics on social issues on the internet and books. I had the aptitude to generate a listing of general social issues that exist today. Since I did not want a topic that was too broad, which could also avail too much information that would not be focused on, I did background reading on the social issues and narrowed the issues down by having subtopics below the main topics4. I also considered the subtopics on violence that had enough sources that I could rely on to help me make my presentation, therefore, making it easy to gather sufficient information for my topic. I was attracted to topics that were linked to violence because I have always abhorred violence. However, I did not have a lot of information on the topic and this led me to review the guidelines on topic selection outlined in my presentation write up. I had watched TV and movies, which had scenes that had some type of violence in them that disgusted me5. Even though I had limited familiarity with the topic, a number of the people I knew at one point, or another had experienced some type of violence and the majority cited domestic violence. I had finally landed on my topic. I conversed with more than a few of my equals about my choice of the topic of domestic violence so that they could provide some insight into the topic because some of them had experienced it. This is because I knew that the familiarity with a particular topic allows an individual to organize his or her thoughts easier and know exactly where one needs to start researching. After listening to what my these individuals had to share, I was convinced that Domestic Violence was my ultimate topic to do a presentation on because they had gone through so much including their families. This helped me choose and limit the scope of my topic6. I chose the topic for a number of reasons. The main reason is that I have colleagues who have experienced domestic violent behavior first hand. These individuals get up every morning and go to sleep every night not knowing what might happen to them next. A number of these individuals are victims of domestic violent behavior, while others are survivors and still need to get information on how to stay away from abusive people and relationships. I wanted to learn what people who are victims of domestic violent behavior go through by listening to real stories from real people. I desired to walk within their shoes and know how it felt because reading stories and facts about domestic violent behavior is off-putting already7. I desired to gather all the facts I could on domestic violence, find out the manner within which these individuals could be assisted and supported. I could also find out what survivors of domestic violence had done to stay away from the people who had abused them and the progress they had made. This was to grant me the details I required to understand the situations the people I know are in and try my best to help them given that I am given an opportunity and I have to the capacity. The second reason is that domestic violent behavior is a concern that is supposed to be taken extremely seriously. This is because violent behavior has grave human, societal, and financial effects for women victims, as well as for the social order as a whole. Violent behavior is also damaging to women’s individual and financial self-determination and has the aptitude to do grave harm to their corporal and psychological well-being8. Domestic violent behavior takes place across the globe, in an assortment of cultures, and has effects on individuals across civilization, irrespective of financial status and sexual category. Family unit, conflict studies discover approximately equivalent percentages of both oral and bodily assault by women, along with men within heterosexual affiliations. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) articulates that domestic violent behavior is a grave, avertable public health predicament that affects more than thirty-two million United States inhabitants or more than ten percent of the United States populace. An approximated 1.3 women within the U.S. are physically abused by a partner who is intimate every year. In the past, women have been affected the most, time and again victimized by an individual they actually recognized. Domestic violent behavior and abuse has the aptitude to take place to any individual yet the predicament is repeatedly ignored, exempted, or even denied. Domestic violent behavior is able to bring about countless effects to victims of the abuse such as women who have been abused, not forgetting the kids given that they are implicated or have observed this distressing event9. The final reason is that domestic violent behavior about power, supremacy, and exploitation. It is intricate with fine distinctions that many individuals will never comprehend unless an individual or a cherished one is going through trauma. Countless victims of domestic violence are in denial and cannot afford to walk out of the relationship for good. They hope that the abuse will finally stop. It is simple to view domestic violent behavior as an unembellished concern. This means that when individuals are being abused, other individuals assume that it is effortless for them to just leave, make a call to the law enforcement, or acquire a restraining order from a court. It is simple to judge people who do not make that choice speedily and effortlessly as one individual would by looking into the situation from the exterior. It is greatly harder to gain knowledge of the degrees, dedicating time to know what really takes place with the victim and the apprehension within which he or she subsists. Consequently, it is imperative for persons to establish the indicators of domestic abuse at the most basic chances, and assist women to obtain support ahead of violence escalation. Research demonstrates that strangulation can be a major risk aspect for domestic killing. At the end of the day, domestic violent behavior is not a personal concern, but a social, political, ethical, and above all a criminal act. Domestic violence has an effect on everyone within society and each individual has a role to play in stopping it10. I noticed a number of things going on for me when I was preparing the presentation. I had enough information on Domestic Violence for the entire presentation. The information I had gathered was simple, clear, and to the point. Since I had all the information that I needed, I was able to develop a clear statement of the topic and its importance11. I easily set out the key points, keeping in mind that I knew my audience, and only considered the most valuable and relevant information on Domestic Violence to my audience and objective. I had the knowledge of where the presentation was going to take place, the time I would be given to present, the day of the talk, the equipment I would need. I was able to think ahead and get a tech knowledgeable associate who will be present throughout the domestic violence presentation who will have the capability of saving the situation if I have a technical difficulty. I had undertaken some research on the manner within which to prepare for presentations, therefore, I had a notion on the manner within which to systematize the material body by making sure I covered the main points by being concrete. I had the knowledge of what a well organized presentation would entail with a clear structure is easier for the audience to follow, making it more effective. Therefore, I was able to organize the main points I had to make in a logical order in three parts of having a short introduction, body of presentation, and a short conclusion12. I had the PowerPoint presentation software installed on my laptop since it is a good tool for organizing your presentation and is useful for creating slides for my presentation. This made it easy to do everything from the same place, which was very convenient. In general, I had almost everything going on for me except for the presentation anxiety I had during the presentation. During the day of the delivery of the presentation, I felt some anxiety. I practiced perfectly exactly how I planned to give my presentation on the big day. I did this by rehearsing for a colleague that I trusted to know how I was going to do in advance. I dressed the part because equally as important to looking sharp is feeling comfortable. I made certain that I was equipped with the materials I needed for the presentation to avoid any hiccups13. I tested the technology by making sure that I tested all of the technical components of my presentation in advance. I identified a knowledgeable associate who will be present throughout the domestic violence presentation who will have the capability of saving the situation if I have a technical difficulty. Before the presentation delivery, I rehearsed to build my confidence and reduce my anxiety. I prepared for questions by thinking about potential queries, and the manner in which I could respond to them. I avoided foodstuff or drink, which has high sugar or caffeine contents since these have the aptitude to make someone feel additionally jittery. I had warm water instead since cold drinks are inclined to contract the verbal chords and could amplify the probability of my voice trembling14. I thought positively about the presentation by not jumping to conclusions about how people would react to my presentation. For instance, imagine that I am delivering my presentation to a grouping of individuals who are interested, motivated, smiling, as well as reacting positively immediately before I deliver the presentation. During the presentation, I did a few things that to distract me from the frozen state. I changed my posture, which actually helped me to collect your thoughts. I used the breathing exercise that I had read about and practiced. I allowed myself time to settle into the presentation and then performed to the best of your ability as it continues. Given that I was a little anxious, I spoke more slowly than I would in a conversation, and left longer pauses between sentences15. This calmed me down, and made me more audible, especially at the back of a large room. I also moved around a little during my presentation as this expended some of my nervous energy. After the presentation, I left room for questions. I remembered not to get defensive about questions, and admit ignorance if I did not know the answer. I answered the questions the best way I could and made sure to answer the questions as exhaustively as I could. When the questions session ended, I asked the audience to fill in the feedback form that had been given to them before the presentation had started. I gave them time to fill the form and requested I have the forms back once they were finished filling them so that I could get information on how to continue improving as a presenter. I thanked the group and joined them to appreciate their presence at my presentation16. After the presentation, I got feedback from a number of my colleagues who were present during the presentation. The majority of them first made their sentiments known about the presentation by saying that they had really liked my presentation, some calling it a good representation while others referred to it as excellent. They thought that the presentation was very involving and touched the whole group. One colleague said that he could not have had the capacity to do the presentation as well as I did terming it an inspirational presentation17. A good number of my colleagues liked and respected the subject topic, which was very interesting, important, and would inevitably cause a ruchas between the individuals in the group. One of the individuals who came to my presentation was quite fascinated by the topic of Domestic Violence because the individual had experienced Domestic Violence before18. Most of them thought that the topic was very well researched and organized. One of my colleagues said that I knew my subject well and really demonstrated a wonderful depth of knowledge, passion, and working experience of the difficult subject. Some said that the topic got them all talking and participating. My colleagues appreciated the actuality that I had engaged them so well19. They thought I managed the comments and questions really well, which was quite admirable. They were also stunned in the manner in which I answered the questions and respond to the discussion. One referred to the discussion as brilliant and said that I spoke with confidence. A colleague said that I definitely held my audience. There was a suggestion put forth that if this were my particular topic of interest, I would get a wider client group for their experiences. I also found out that three people from the group who have witness Domestic Violence do not believe in the Cycle of Abuse theory because the abuser does not feel guilty of what he has done. Finally, all of them thanked me and appreciated my presentation20. After going through all the feedback from the group, I felt elated and relieved. I thought that much more things in life seemed to be more beautiful; everything seemed to be more giving. Reading how great I did put my nerves at ease for next time. I was grateful that my first audience was actually supportive and did not ridicule me on my topic given the fact that I had really worked hard on doing the research and preparing for the presentation. The audience gave me the encouragement I needed to start delivering more presentations on subjects that I felt people should know more about and had significance to me, as well as society. I also felt that the suggestions and information that were availed during within the feedback forms would be considered in my future presentations on the same topic. This is because the presentation done on domestic violence does not end here for me; I have promised myself to help the people I know who have endured domestic violent behavior. I also intend to make a difference in society because I hold information, which will have the aptitude to enhance my comprehension of the topic, and make even better presentations on a similar issue or additional topics in future. Looking back, I have learned that Domestic Violence is a model of abusive actions, which has the capacity to take place within a dating, married, live-in intimate spouse affiliation. Within an affiliation that is abusive, one individual attempts to retain control over another by utilizing physical, psychological, sexual, fiscal, and emotional21. Even though aspects, for instance, drug, along with alcohol utilization, constant worry, or a family account of abuse might put into the predicament, domestic violent behavior is for the most part a concern of authority and supremacy. In addition, divergent to popular conviction, domestic violent behavior takes place across every socioeconomic and civilizing environment. Domestic violence has no limits and is present amongst dating affiliations, same-sex affiliations, as well as older individuals who are victims. It additionally has an effect on lives of kids, disabled individuals, as well as immigrants22. I have also learned that an excellent good presentation encloses at slightest four aspects. An excellent presentation has information, which individuals require. Presentations are supposed to account for how much data the audience has the capacity on taking in within a single sitting. Presentation structure refers to a logical sequence of arranging information within a presentation. The logical sequence includes a start, middle, and conclusion23. It is supposed to be cycled and paced in order for the audience to comprehend it. This is because, within presentations, the speaker is required to be cautious so that he or she does not lose the attention of the audience while drifting from the presentation’s key point. The presentation package is essential for any presentation since for the duration of a presentation, the presenter has the mercy of the audience24. Finally, the human element is needed for an excellent presentation. This is because the audience will consider that the people have an attachment to it. The presenter, on the other hand, has got to evaluate the audience’s requirements to establish what will work best for the audience.
