Extract of sample "My Initial Role in Design"

Teacher A Manifesto Graphic design develops the idea of other people, usually in the corporate world, into a communicable image that has style and design. In short, graphic design is a visual representation of a certain that try to communicate certain message. The medium can range with a variety of things that could include images, drawing, painting, photography, computer generated pictures etch. Graphic design could be used as a business logo, album cover, cover of magazines, books, the list goes on and on. A good design is not only aesthetically pleasing but also communicates a clear and coherent message that conveys a certain idea. With regard to its aesthetic qualities, it has the qualities of beauty, harmony and symmetry where none can be taken or added that would not impair the totality of the design. My initial role in design is to first learn to create a good design. A good design requires multidisciplinary approach which includes ability to draw, manipulate computer, take pictures, understand color theories and to create concepts through images that people could understand. After learning these things, my role then transformed to be able inspire, create, improve and learn. I believe that a good design is a product of inspired moment that is aptly captured and have physical attribute for others to be inspired as well. That process of giving inspiration a physical attribute so that others may see is the creative process of rendering the inspiration. This creative process however is never completed and must constantly be improved to optimize the best design possible. On my end, I must also continue to learn so that I can better render the inspiration that I have. I treat design as an artwork. My value towards it similar to fine artists and painters who would first look and feel for an inspiration and then make that emotion to be felt in their work. I could also say that my life is reflected in my designs. It is because my design is the expression of myself. And myself is the collection of my experience, knowledge, beliefs, hopes, aspirations, my sense of beauty, or anything that made me a person. And this is expressed and seen in my design. Getting it out of me to make a good design is not an easy process and could take time but I believe that it will be worth the effort because the output would surely be beautiful. My personal values about design are a lot. Firstly, I truly believe that art imitates life. In this aspect, graphic design is one of the expressions of art. Design is an expression of my collective self, of what I observed around my surrounding, what I felt, what I think. It could even be an expression of my values, hopes and aspirations. Yes it can even be said that the artwork that an artist makes, including graphic design is an expression of his or her soul. I believe that good designs are a product of an inspired moment that is captured in a concrete work be it in drawing, painting, photography etch. It could follow or not follow the rules of good design but that would not matter for as long as the design is beautiful. I also believe that design as a process does not end. It is an ever continuing process because beauty is always relative and is never fixed. What is beautiful anyway? It is always the beholder who could judge. Thus, it compels me to continue to improve so that more and more people will find my designs to be beautiful. There are always a lot of ways to render a good design. The ways to learn new things and to improve are infinite so I have to continue learning, practicing and improving even if people will say that I am already a good graphic design artist. With regard to how I relate to various people and how my design interacts with them, I must begin with the belief that my design is basically a product of my collective person. That collective person is the kind of person that I am whose knowledge, experience, emotion, thoughts and ideas are expressed into my artworks and design. That knowledge, experience, emotion, thoughts and ideas are derived from how I interact with the various people around me such as family and friends including strangers. But these knowledge, experience, emotion, thoughts and ideas are not only derived from my interactions to various people but also on how the situation and circumstance of life are presented to me. Being such, I always endeavour to be nice to people around me because people tend to treat me the same the way I treat them. When people are nice to me, it feels good and it inspires me to be creative. Compared to being treated badly which leads to a bad day that I cannot do anything creative. It is just when people are nice and good, it rubs on me that I also feel good that world seems to open up to and I do the same. And so, the creative process begins. In addition to treating people nicely, the people around me are also a source of my inspiration to create good designs. They are the source of my collective experience and knowledge as a person that is why I strive to make such interactions and relationships positive. People have such a special way of touching our soul that makes us feel good about everything and this can reflect on our art work including graphic design. As an artist and graphic designer, I believe that I am the harshest critique of my work although I do not verbalize it but just keep it to myself. This explains why some of the designs that I created took some time to finish because I am not contented with what I did that I have to do corrections and sometimes, repeat the entire artwork. I also constantly study the work of other artists and try to learn from them. There are artists whose works are so beautiful that I admire and learn from them. At present, I am still in the early phase of my journey as a graphic designer. I am still in school learning the ropes of graphic design. This process of learning however will not stop even after I graduate because I always strive to become better with my draft. With regard to the question of what I could change, I would rather treat is as what I can improve with myself. I am still young and it follows that I am still awkward with a lot of things but time, perseverance and help from my teachers, I could become better both as a person and as a graphic designer. These aspirations that I listed are influenced mainly by three ideas in my life. First, is the idea or love for art itself as a unique expression of a man’s soul. Second are the lessons and ideas I learned in school because they shape the kind of graphic artists that I will be in the future and lastly, the idea that the quest for beauty in art work never ends motivates me to always to seek new ways on how to improve my work. Finally, it will be worth mentioning that I am fortunate to pursue the vocation that I really love and hopefully, to make a good living out of it in the future. It is seldom that people are able to make a profession out of their passion that is why I consider myself fortunate. Read More
