Berkley and Idealism - Essay Example

Berkley analyzes the causal theory which was developed by Locke and asks a legitimate question: why cannot people perceive the color of things, but only the shape? In other words, it does not really make sense that in the process of perceiving the world colors are lost, but not the shape. Finally, Berkley argues that it is common sense to put emphasis on what a person can interact with directly which is the idea in the mind, rather than the notion of matter. He thinks that it would be better if people got rid of the mysterious elements of reality, but focused on the perception that they have in mind.

I must admit that there is the logic behind the points which are brought up by Berkley. However, if one develops them, one will come to rather absurd results. That is why I find his ideas disagreeable. In other words, while I can not see fallacies in his argument, I see a fallacy in the outcome; therefore, I choose to reject it as false.
