When density decreased, chemistry temporarily ended until formation of the first cosmological objects due to gravity. The reionization phase occurred when photons from stars disassociated molecules, ionized them and re-ionized the universe. This article relates to the material being studied because of how it illustrates how molecular processes occur also in the early universe. The type of processes seen during any particular epoch of the universe depended on the environment the universe was in; for instance, whether there was a high energy radiation field or whether the density of the matter and radiation was high enough for the particles and molecules to interact. Many of the questions that have been considered, such as forces between molecules are considered in this article, but applied to the context of the early universe. There are four different forces between molecules. These are dipole-dipole forces; Debye forces (dipole-induced dipole forces); ion-dipole forces; and London dispersion forces (instantaneous induced dipole-induced dipole forces). ...
Water is a liquid at room temperature because of the hydrogen bonds (a type of chemical bond) that exist between the hydrogen atoms in different water molecules. Oxygen at room temperature is a gas because it lacks these hydrogen bonds. Water is H20: two hydrogen atoms connected to an oxygen atom, which is strongly electronegative (tends to attract electrons). Soaps are created from the chemical reaction saponification; this creates hydrolysis of fats that result in the sodium or potassium fatty acid salts that make up the soap. Soap works by surrounding (emulsifying) and attaching itself to the oil, dirt , etc. on your skin and floating away with it in fast moving water. Soap molecules have a head and tail like a sperm: the head consists of carboxylate (-CO2); the tail consists of a long hydrocarbon chain. The head of the soap molecule is an organic hydrophilic (water-loving) molecule that tends to attach itself to stuff because when soap hits water, the soap’s sodium and potassium ions float free, leaving the head negatively charged. The head interacts with water molecules through ion-dipole forces and hydrogen bonding. The tail of the soap molecule functions to float away in the water. It is hydrophobic (water-fearing); the tail does not interact with water molecules. The tail’s hydrocarbon chains attract each other by dispersion forces and form micelle structures. A hydrocarbon is an organic compound made only of carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons are important because they are a source of energy as a combustible fossil fuel source; they are a top component of gasoline, coal, oil and natural gas; however, burning hydrocarbons is a ...Show more
