Addressing Cultural Complexities My interviewee is called Eric Mugambi, my neighbour, and the following is the recordings of the interview results. Eric Mugambi Profile Gender: Male Race: African Nationality: Kenyan Cultural influences: Meru culture ( Meru is a tribe in Kenya) Religion: Christianity Sexual Orientation: Straight Education level: Bachelor of Arts, BA Economic activity: Teacher Social economic status: Middle class The respondent said that among the various aspects of his identity, he finds the identity of cultural influence as the most important identity in his life; this is because the cultural identity is the aspect of his identity that formed the very foundation of his identity and as such, it is the aspect of his identity that has greatly, more than any other aspect of his identity, has influenced his world view.

The respondent said that religion is the second most important aspect of his identity. This is because, besides his cultural orientation, his religion and his faith is the second major factor that determines his world view and his approach to life. The respondent said that he was introduced to Christianity at a very tender age, and all throughout his life he had been made to develop a Christian approach to life. As such, his religion is the second most important aspect of his identity. The respondent said that the identity that he spends least time thinking about is his sexual orientation.

He said that according to his culture, debates on sexual orientations are not entertained. For that reason, he said that he grew up viewing people’s sexual orientation not as a controversial issue, and not as an issue deserving much attention in life. The respondent therefore said that he doesn’t spend much time thinking about his sexual orientation. On the most important aspect of his identity, i.e., his culture, the interviewee said that as a child he was taught to embrace his culture and to view the world in terms of his culture.

Some of the messages that he received as a child include the following. First, he was taught that life is sacred and that he should value and protect human life at all cost. This teaching made him to develop a deep respect for human lif
