The current research enhances the present conclusions in the previous studies and points out the sum of addition problems is until 10 and children usually use retrieval, but when the answer is more than 10, they usually use calculation procedures.A French school with forty-two fifth-graders participated in the experiment and they were aged 10.4 years on average with a range of 9.11 to 10.10. The trials contained four numbers presented in the following arrangement: the first operand, the second operand, an answer, and a target.

The operands were equivalent to 24 different pairs of numbers. Eight of the pairs were composed of low numbers ranging between one and nine, the sums of which never exceeded 10. Eight pairs were made of median numbers between four and nine, the total was more than 12. Lastly, the last eight pairs were composed of big numbers between seven and 18, the total was greater than 20, always required a carry, and never ended in zero.
