Money is a big irresistible source of temptation in today’s society. Life is hard, the incomes that most people earn are barely enough to take them through the month and this is so despite man’s desire to always have the best. The best refers to that which is out rightly unaffordable. Buzzati was employed and one may assume that he earned a respectable salary. A salary is another aspect of money; no matter how much one has, the temptation to resist some more is always hard and people would do anything to earn just a little more than they already do.

            Money is perceived to be the key to literally anything: good life, beautiful women, and expensive designer suits. This has made most people fall to the allure of wanting to have more. After receiving the first banknote, the fully conscious Buzzati felt the urge to call the tailor and explain his bizarre development. However, the urge to keep the money to himself was more tempting. This was a note of equal value to any other and he was earning it at no extra investment. It presented an offer to Sweet to leave.

            The consequences of such engagements with the devil have dire consequences; one loses the sense of self-worth and despite the bitter truth always nagging at the back of the mind, the desire to get more and more money would always be more attractive. The case at hand offers a clearer understanding. Even though he knew that the money he was receiving from this mysterious suit was illegitimate, he still managed to put on a confident look and engaged himself in reason convincing himself that he had no connections to the strange happenings around him.

            Fletcher (1998) explains that conscience makes persons and any man or woman with this is as good as dead. Such people have no respect for human life and do not share in the pains of other members of society. Provided that their selfish ambitions are met, they will always be comfortable within themselves. Buzzati read as innocent people lost their lives but he was unperturbed, he kept spending the money like he rightfully earned it. The feelings that he had once had for the societal norms had left him and in their place was this cold mean individual who cared less no matter how many people died.

            The biggest and worst of all these consequences is that once one gets into a pact with sin, there is normally a way out. Draper (2003) offers that the trappings of sin can be explained both psychologically and theologically: the easy way of earning without sweating is addictive and one would always want some more and on the other hand. Satan is in constant competition for supremacy with God and he thus does not leave those he has selected.
