Recent Discoveries of New Cognitive and Brain Information Recent discoveries in cognitive and brain information have an impact in the current and future work of psychologists. Developments in the area of lifelong learning, ageing, education, mental disorders and other aspects of neuroscience will all affect the way psychologists approach various issues that they face regarding the analysis and interpretation of activities in the human brain. One area where psychologists, as well as educators and academicians will have to modify their methods is in the latest findings on the optimal timing or “sensitive periods” when the capacity to learn is greatest in areas such as language learning (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation 11).

According to recent studies, speech sounds, certain emotional and cognitive experiences like language exposure are better acquired during the sensitive periods unlike vocabulary acquisition which are obtained anytime during one’s life span (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation 2). Psychologists and educators must take this finding into consideration in designing curricula for the young children and adults in order for the learning process to be more effective. Educational policy and practice will be better designed taking into consideration the new understanding on the learning process of individuals of different ages.

Psychologist will benefit on the latest neuroscience’s development on the learning challenges such as dyslexia and dementia. In the case of dyslexia, its causes are now known; therefore, it would be easier for psychologists to identify its features and make early detection and intervention possible (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation 6). In the case of dementia, new research has shown that to counteract the reduced functioning of the brain there should be a “close interdependence of physical and intellectual well-being and the close interplay of the emotional and cognitive” (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation 2).

With these new findings in mind, psychologist will have a more enlightened approach at treating this psychological disorder and can be in a better position to treat their patients. In conclusion, one can say that recent developments and researches in the field of neurosciences are welcome changes in the practice of psychology.
