An individual properly verbalises their opinion if they are upset with politics (Hoyer, 2008). If that individual occurs to be in the presence of others, many individuals who have the same politics might also anger in a given gathering; the displayed behaviour may get more physical, such as in the form of a riot rather than verbal in their home solitude (Darley, 2001).

Conformity may result from disapproval avoidance, motivation, and low self-esteem to achieve social approval from colleagues (Hoyer, 2008). Agreement varies by culture and is linked to a given culture's livelihood. Based on different cultures, societal norms will change and are majority-determined (Hoyer, 2008). If too much judgment individually is utilized, where collective efforts for sustainability are vital, a societal norms breakdown may create havoc on a systematically dependent environment (Darley, 2001).

Conformity seems to be more prevalent in collectivist cultures that are opposed to individualistic cultures (Hoyer, 2008). Depending on how individuals predict the value of agreement to an opinion or idea, one can find criticism, rejection, and adulation (Darley, 2001). Even if a general statement is manifestly wrong, many will conform to the idea of possibly maintaining harmony within a social setting in a group setting (Darley, 2001). Many people will change their public expression of their beliefs when confronted with a group that disagrees, even if they know the opinion or idea is incorrect, as displayed in Asch’s studies (Hoyer, 2008).

Boosting the morale of an athletic team is more likely by involving more of the crowd (McAdams, 2006). The same can be observed in riot situations, where strong feelings are more likely to be evoked and agreed upon in the masses due to the presence of others. The company of others can make individuals conform and either benefit or hurt them (Wren, 1999).

Groupthink was a concept identified by Irving Janis, which refers to decision-making which is faulty in a group (Hoyer, 2008). Groups undergoing groupthink do not consider all alternatives, and unanimity is a desire at the expense of quality decisions; this might be exemplified best again through riot circumstances. According to Janis, most group thinking symptoms are invulnerability delusions and unanimity illusion, not expressing someone’s true feelings (Handwerk, 2005). The blind obedience to the study of authority conducted by Stanley Milgram is an example of how social influence can change how an individual will behave regardless of his or her belief personally in the presence of a figure of authority in a hierarchical situation (Wren, 1999).
