MOTIVATIONAL THEORY - GOOGLE It is one of the most important functions of human resource department to motivate the employees. By motivating the employees organizations are able to keep the productivity of the employees high and if the employees are motivated then they work harder to make sure that they give back to the organization. Motivation can be divided into two types; intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation can be defined as enjoyment or excitement in the work that encourages the employees to perform better.

On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is motivation that comes out of the task (Salaman, Storey, and Billsberry, 2005).Organizations use different strategies to motivate the employees. Google uses a combination of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The human resource strategies adapted by Google have been highly successful and the way Google manages its employees is one of the secrets of success. The company relies a lot on its human resource and therefore it has formulated innovation strategies to motivate the employees.

Intrinsic motivation is used by the organization to encourage them to work harder. Some of the intrinsic motivation strategies that Google has adapted include; the working environment, flexible working hours, creating an environment where employees collaborate with each other in order to achieve the organizational goals. By forming teams, Google helps its employees to work in groups and in teams and everyone makes sure that they work hard in order to achieve the goals of the teams (Google, 2014).

At Google, the management encourages its employees to be innovative in their approach and to come up with new ideas and share these ideas. The working environment provided by the company encourages team work. Similarly employees at Google have the flexiblity to work whether at their desk or anywhere. The management believes that an employee does not need to be restricted at his desk to find the solution of the problem at work. Moreover, interaction and communication are important tools in finding the solution (Google, 2014).
