Social loafing occurs when an individual over relies on the other members of the group; lack of self-confidence and the feeling that their contribution in the group will not be considered lowers the individuals performance (Klehe, Anderson & Hoefnagels, 2007). In the media, Ken, Kathy, and Gavin demonstrate social facilitation. Ken initiated the meeting, and was willing to support the idea of PowerPoint since he had been working on several PowerPoint projects. Ken had downloaded software that he could use to edit the images and videos.

Kathy was so active and proposed the idea of PowerPoint presentations while Gavin recommended the use of physical demonstrations. Amanda expressed social inhibition since she was not sure of what was going on and could not even trace the files she had kept in her computer while Brian demonstrated social loafing because he was relying on the other team members to contribute. Brian only seconded them but did not add anything to the discussion (Guerin, 2009). Amanda demonstrated social inhibition.

Amanda’s behavior during the discussion showed that she was not ready since she complained of her getting the information three days before the discussion. To ensure that such situations do not occur, the team leader should ensure that every member of the group gets the information in time. Since the members had some ideas on what the discussion was going to be about, the team leader should insist that everyone puts together the data and information they posses, which is related to their topic of discussion.

By doing so, all the members will have a chance to participate. Rather than Ken going to retrieve the information Amanda had archived in her computer, she should be given time to find the file and present it to the group. Providing a situation in which all members take part in a group discussion reduces the amount of tension and fear, the members open up to new ideas. Assignment #2 Impact Group Behavior Group settings create a situation in which the individuals in the group make judgments and decisions that are extreme; their consequences can be either positive or negative.

As the discussions intensify, the members shift their attitudes towards one direction that limits their possibility to look into available options, a situation called groupthink. Individuals tend to identify themselves basing on their values (Weiten 2011). During our second year in the University, the tuition fees was raised by 10 percent of the amount were paying, because almost all students were not satisfied, the student leaders together with other influential students held several meeting and discussion.

The group attained a decision where the students stormed the University’s structures: hostels, classrooms, and administrative offices without critically examining the consequences of the act. Most of the learning facilities were destroyed; therefore, suspension of students from school for several months. The perpetrators were taken to court where the judge decided that the parents of the students had to pay for the damages caused. The students lost a lot academically because they spent most of their time attending court cases.
