But the paradigm has shifted. Freud is no more the monarch of all that he once surveyed. But still, he is not the force liable to be ignored and the students of psychology and clinical practitioners will remember him for his original thinking on the various subjects dealt with by him. Freud founded the “talk therapy” practice and this practice of the 19th century is still relevant today, speaks about his foresight and ingenuity.

But in actual psychological practice, most of his theories are irrelevant. Only the basic mode of treatment, the questionnaire part of it, is credited to his work. For example, his specific theory on the stages of psychosexual development and the related methodology is out of date as per modern experimental psychology. Still, Freud is an impact, an influence and as the Father of Psychology, he will continue to command respect. But as per the ground realities of treatment, the sons of Psychology have outsmarted the father for good and scientific reasons.

The students of Psychology have to move on with the latest scientific research findings and cannot afford to cling on to old loyalties Freud was not a blind, dogmatic follower and as such he would welcome the current developments/modifications on his theories.
