Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory An example of a verbal/linguistic intelligence is that of the , like Edgar Allan Poe or William Shakespeare. His auditory skills are highly developed and he often uses words when thinking. He is usually adept at using language and his intelligence depends on how well he can use language. This translates as his ability to speak as well as to write (“Howard Gardner’s”). Thus, if he is a good writer, then he is verbally intelligent. An example of a body-kinesthetic intelligence is that of athletes like Michael Jordan or Selena Gomez.

Athletes usually exercise manual dexterity, agility, balance, and eye and body coordination, and these are the very things that are measured when it comes to body-kinesthetic intelligence (“Howard Gardner’s”). Their ability of athletes to use all these qualities and transform them into something that can propel them to athletic success is the measure of such intelligence. An example of a logical/mathematical intelligence is that of engineers. Engineers possess analytical skills in dealing with problems, performing mathematical calculations mentally, detecting patterns, and understanding cause and effect relationships (“Howard Gardner’s”).

The engineer’s ability to make all these qualities work together for his professional success is what is gauged as logical/mathematical intelligence. Some arguments that critics have offered against Gardner include the theory’s lack of empirical support especially the lack of literature for a theory on 8 autonomous intelligences. Another criticism is that there is no concrete research that supports for the existence of multiple intelligences in the classroom (Armstrong). Thus, any information regarding how to develop the 8 multiple intelligences in the classroom is somehow scientifically baseless.

Still, one more criticism, according to Armstrong, is that the multiple intelligences theory somehow makes the curriculum suit all students and somehow mistakenly convince them that they are all smart.Top of FormBottom of FormWorks CitedArmstrong, Thomas. “Chapter 15.
