Epistemology can also be described in a perspective of obtaining knowledge out of an ambiguous aspect. Distinction between the scientific theories and the practical aspect in relation to episteme varies from authors. There was no distinction between the two according to the early philosophers. Aristotle described art and science as episteme basically because they were both practical oriented, his theories were based on the application of knowledge. Plato based his theory concerning form that knowledge is purely theoretical. The perception of forms and theories of knowledge may have changed in the modern philosophy but the work of the great philosophers; Aristotle and Plato was significant in development of the modern science. The ancient philosophers did not differentiate knowledge based on art and science; For instance they grouped mathematics, painting, music and astronomy as episteme in the same category and were termed episteme. At the onset of Memorabilia, the philosophers referred the craft to techne. Socrates for instance referred episteme as diligence, care and practice. Basically he was refereeing the knowledge as craft and practical application of skills. The argument over his definition of episteme can be obtained from virtue definitions. Just from his definition of knowledge, he said knowledge can be accumulated. Giving an example of a wise person who would accumulate knowledge from various skills, he said that would be not accomplished by a person who just knows the theory of the universe. Socrates however pointed out that knowledge alone was not enough to give prosperity. For instance someone may have knowledge but unwilling to apply or someone maybe willing to apply the knowledge but may not have enough wealth to apply the knowledge. Plato republic There is no direct definition of episteme by Plato however his dialogues reflects on episteme. His consistent dialogue reflected the concept of episteme and techne. To illustrate the nature of knowledge and science in his dialogue, Plato mentioned episteme related activities such as geometry, medicine, pottery prophecy among others. The activities mentioned had a practitioner. For example the carpentry had a carpenter. Basically the activities mention by the Plato had some common characteristics. Basically techne and episteme according to Plato had little difference. Description by Plato was clearer on the matters relating to episteme and techne and their difference however there was strong relationship than difference. Plato tried to explain the sense of knowledge in the account of being able to deduce logic. For instance in the case of mathematics, the analyses are based on the fundamentals obtained from reality. Plato believed that knowledge was omnipresent and the soul of the human being was born with knowledge. He used metaphors to explain the episteme and its application in nature. He explained the act of believe and illusion in relation to knowledge and clarity using a line. Basically according the shadows represents the illusions created by other on a person. It is believed that the illusions are dark and just come from a dream and may not be achieved practically. On the contrary, the light is visible and can be used associated with reality. The light basically means knowledge as per the interpretation from Cooper’s. “Imagine him being dragged forcibly away from thee up the rough steep slope - without being released until he’s been pulled out into the sunlight” (p.28). From his dialogue with the Socrates, he refers the light as knowledge and that a person may not be in a position to clearly observe unless he has knowledge. Plato also used was the water in describing his philosophy. He used ...Show more
