Reflection Adolescence development is an area of content we have discussed in after exam 2. Adolescence development, as the suggests, refers to the development that takes place during adolescence. An individual undergoes developments in different areas and on different levels during this critical stage; there is emotional development, psychological development, mental development, and most notably physical development. Nurture plays a very important role in healthy development during adolescence.

Adolescence is overwhelmingly rated as the most difficult parenting stage by the parents (Weiten, Dunn, and Hammer). I was blessed to have received a lot of love, care, and affection from my family during adolescence. I have a close emotional bond not only with my parents, but also my grandparents, siblings, as well as my uncles and aunts. We have a very large family and we value relationships a lot. During my adolescence, I frequently went to my uncles’ and aunts’ for vacations. I have a lot of friends from among my cousins.

My family guided me through each and every matter during adolescence. No matter how personal or private a matter was, I could always spot someone to discuss it with. This lent me a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. I learned to connect with others in a positive way and try to be a good influence in the lives of others. In the past five years, I have undergone a transition from adolescence to adulthood. My understanding of adolescence development has not shifted a lot in the past 5 years.

However, when I reflect upon my adolescence period, I can identify many mistakes today that I might not have been able to identify few years back because of lack of understanding and maturity. For example, sometimes, during my adolescence, I engaged in lengthy arguments with others in an attempt to win the argument, but now I realize that unnecessary argumentation is a waste of time and energy. I have learned that others have a right to keep their opinions as I have the right to keep mine; while I should stand for my point, I should not try to enforce it on others.

The topic of adolescence development is linked to my career goals because the kind of upbringing, company, and nurture an individual gets during adolescence plays a very important role in determining the individual’s aptitude and abilities for a certain profession. I have people representing and belonging to all sorts of professions in my family; there are doctors, engineers, lawyers, and the list goes on. During my adolescence, I decided which profession I would choose and so far, have advanced in the very direction.

Popular culture shapes and designs the environment in which adolescents are raised. Surrounded by the images and influences of the popular culture all the time, adolescents grow up into adults that endorse popular culture with all its elements. Popular culture’s impact on adolescents and their developmental pattern is magnanimous. For example, adolescents are very fashion conscious. They learn new styles of dressing, talking, and interacting with others from the latest trends in the popular culture.
