SGA: Assessing Intellectual Ability Using the WISC-IV Case Study: Jackie Jackie is a 10-year-old Caucasian female who was referred for an evaluation because of academic problems. She is currently in the fifth grade. According to her mother, Jackie has attended the same school since initial enrollment in school, including pre-kindergarten. She has an excellent attendance record, is extremely well-behaved in school, and has an exemplary conduct record in the past. Regarding her academic performance, Jackie is currently experiencing many academic difficulties and has had many academic difficulties in the past.

Most recent standardized achievement test results show that she scored below average in Reading, Math, and Language.Jackie arrived on time for the assessment and was accompanied by her mother. Identify the descriptive classifications of the FSIQ, Index scores, and subtest scaled scores. (list responses on pg. 1, under column “Descriptive Classification”)2. Interpret Jackie’s Index composite scores and describe what each Index measures. Use the following interpretation of the FSIQ as the format for your answers.The Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) is an estimate of global intellectual functioning. Jackie’s FSIQ is 97, which is within the average range of intellectual functioning. She scored at the 42nd percentile, which means that her score is equal to or exceeds approximately 42% of the national comparison group.

Verbal Comprehension IndexThe Verbal Comprehension Index measures an individual’s verbal knowledge as well as the understanding obtained from both formal and informal education. It reflects how an individual uses verbal skills in new situations. Jackie’s scores are within the average range.Perceptual Reasoning IndexThe PRI measures the ability of interpreting and organizing visual material as well as producing and testing hypotheses which are related to problem solving.Working Memory Index The WMI is responsible for measuring the working memory of a child and their ability to sustain attention, concentrate and exert mental control.

Processing Speed Index The PSI is responsible for measuring the ability of processing visually perceived material quickly with eye-hand coordination and concentration. 3. Based on her subtest scores, how would you describe any relative subtest strengths and weaknesses Jackie may have?Jackie’s FSIQ is 97 and falls within the average range of intellectual functioning. Jackie’s strengths lie within her verbal capabilities with weaknesses observed on the working memory. Jackie’s verbal reasoning abilities indicate that she may find it easy to engage in conversations.

Weaknesses in the non-verbal tests (working memory) indicate that Jackie may have challenges with processing visual routine material. Slowness in processing simple information engages the child’s cognitive resources thus slowing down the processing of complex information and makes new learning quite challenging.
