The latter was first published by the American Psychiatric Association in 1952. There have been four revisions since then giving rise to DSM -I, DSM-2, DSM-3 and the most recent one, DSM-IV which took place in 1994 which was later on updated and then referred to as DSM-IV-TR, which is presently in use. The key areas altered were the descriptions and literature reviews that there update was vital. However, there was also a text revision of the same in 2000. There is latest version of DSM is yet to be published in this year (2003) after the reception of feedbacks and comments from various sources over the same (Barkley & Edwards 64). One of the changes effected on DSM-IV giving rise to DSM-IV-TR were made on Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This is according to dsmistory.umwblogs.org. The changes effected stated that for a patient to undergo PTSD diagnosis, one ought to have been, for a period of not less than two months, exposed to a traumatic occurrence, “re-experiencing” episodes of the occurrence and show avoidant symptoms. These symptoms are characterized by a victim showing a restricted range of the effect, he/she keeping away from places, people or discussions that arouse their memories of the traumatic event. These reminders may be in form of conversations, places or people. According to www.anxietybc.com, anxiety disorders apparent in children include: separation anxiety disorder, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and post traumatic stress disorder. Separation anxiety disorder is predominant in preschool children. It occurs when they are separated from what they value most like a parent, a house girl they are used to or from home. Unlike their age mates that are not victims of the same, the victim cries when the parent leaves after having escorted him/her to school in the morning, clinging on the parent when he or she leaves home, refusal to go to school, eat or even sleep in the absence of the parent. The major symptoms are dizziness and stomachaches. The onset age is 5 but it is most common between 7 – 9 years. Treatment entails practicing separation. This is through leaving the child with his/her older siblings or the house girl, leaving in the absence of a fanfare (tell the child you are leaving when you mean it. Leave immediately you say so), exercising separation when the child has just woken up or eaten (children are susceptible to the disorder when hungry or tired. Secondly, another type of an anxiety disorder is the post traumatic stress disorder. This usually occurs in children who have once experience or have been witnesses of frightening traumatic occurrences. The key symptoms are getting upset when they are reminded of the occurrence, nightmares and evading anything that would alert their memories of the event. It is evident before the age of 5. Some of the treatment methods for this kind of disorder are family therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMRD), family therapy and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (Barkley & Edwards 67). Specific phobias are another anxiety disorder. It is characterized by the victims developing phobias for animals such as pets, darkness, injection and even swimming.
